Tightening sequence

- Tighten bolts - 1 to 4 - to specified torque in the


sequence shown.

- Then tighten nut - 5 - to specified torque.

Steering column, removing and installing

The steering column is supplied only as a complete service


part. Service is not possible.

Removing

Warning!

Before starting work on the electrical system and


removing the steering wheel, the following conditions
must be met:

„ Remove Ground (GND) strap from the battery

27, battery; remove and install battery cables

„ The wheels must be in the straight ahead


position.

If the following instructions are not followed, the


airbag system may fail during subsequent vehicle
operation.

- Set wheels to the straight ahead position.

- Place selector lever in the "N" position and turn ignition


off.

- Remove airbag

- Raise vehicle.

- If installed, remove guard plate - A - from steering gear


(2 bolts).

- Remove bolt - B - for steering gear universal joint and


remove universal joint from steering gear.

- Carefully slide lower shaft down into the upper shaft as


far as stop.

Vehicles with 10-cyl. diesel engine

- Loosen steering gear and slide to left.

Continued for all vehicles

- Remove three nuts for protective boot - Arrows - .

On some engine versions, the upper nuts are accessible


from above through the engine compartment.

- Remove brake light switch F

- Remove yoke - 1 - - Arrows - .

- On vehicle with electric steering column, disconnect


connector - 1 - .

- Disconnect remaining connectors and pull wires from


retainers on left and right sides of steering column.

- Remove bolts - Arrows - .

- Remove bolt - 1 - and then bolt - 2 - .

- Carefully remove steering column.

Note:

„ The upper and lower parts of the steering column

must not be separated without identifying marks.

„ The steering can start to rattle in subsequent


operation if the gears are no longer in their original
installation position.

- If the protective boot has to be removed 48-2,

Warning!

Retainer - 1 - must not be removed.

It is used for protection during transportation.

Installing

Installation is reverse of removal, with special attention to


the following:

- When the mechanical steering column is replaced, the


knob for steering column adjustment must also be
replaced.

- Place steering column on cross member.

- Install all bolts and run up by hand.

- Tighten bolts.

Tightening sequence

- Tighten bolts - 1 to 4 - to specified torque in sequence


shown.

- Tighten nut - 5 - to specified torque.

- Install universal joint on steering column pinion and


tighten.

- Install protective boot in proper position and tighten.

If a new steering column is being installed, the electrical


steering column adjuster must be adapted with the vehicle
diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051 .

- To do this in "guided fault finding" first select the


"immobilizer" system, then "adapting the ELV" .

- Perform basic setting for steering angle sensor G85 with


the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS
5051 .

Tightening torques
Universal joint at steering gear 40 Nm plus an additional 1 / 4 turn (90 )
„ Use new bolt.

Guard plate at steering gear (if installed) 10 Nm


Steering column at cross member 20 Nm

„ Use new nut.

Protective boot at bulkhead 4 Nm

Protective boot, removing and installing

- Remove steering column 48-2, Removing .

Removing

- Mount steering column in vise as shown in illustration.

- Mark position of the upper part to lower part.

- Pull lower part off the upper part with a sharp jerk in
direction of - arrow - .

- Remove protective boot from lower part.

Installing

Lubricate the seal lightly - Arrow - with G 052 172 A1 .

- Before installation, inspect the surface of the guide on the


lower part - Arrow - for dirt and scoring.

If the surface shows evidence of scoring, the steering


column must be replaced since optimal sealing
between the steering column and the protective boot
cannot be ensured.

- Push protective boot onto the lower part, rotating it


slightly as shown in the illustration.

- Assemble steering column so that the marks line up and


the steering column can be pushed together with minimal
effort.

- When the steering column has been correctly assembled,


the lower part cannot be separated from the upper part
using normal force.

- Install steering column 48-2, Installing .
