DISCUSSION:
Do you remember the little lessons your parents or your
kindergarten teacher told you when you were still a little child? You
were often reminded to share, to not hurt other children, to be
mindful not to waste your food because others have nothing to
eat, and simply be sensitive to the
needs of others. Concern for
others never goes of style. It is a
value which will help you maintain
and sustain good interpersonal
relationships.
Concern for others means to
care about what is happening to
others, to take interest in their
situation or predicament. It
involves awareness. This
awareness should flow into action
to help others and, if possibly
make the other person rise from his misery or difficult situation. To
have concern for other’s is to look out for the welfare or well-being
of others. For example, if you entered your classroom and you saw
a looking so distressed, concern would move you to approach that
classmates and gently ask him or her what is bothering him or her.
If you want to taker step further, you could ask him or her if there is
anything you could do to help. Concern would also move you to
offer help to a younger sibling who is having a hard time with his or
her studies.
HERE ARE WAYS HOW YOU CAN SHOW CONCERN FOR OTHERS
1. Be aware. Look around you and see if there is someone in need
or a classmate who looks sad and may need someone to listen to
him or her.
2. Take responsibility. Do not be the source of stress of your parents
or teachers because you are not doing your tasks. Be someone
who is pleasant and does not cause irritation because you are not
doing your job.
3. Take a chance. In some cases, people will not volunteer to ask
for help. Ask people if they need help or assistance. They might just
be waiting for someone to approach them.
4. Take the initiative. Help around the house even if your mother is
not asking you to do household chores. Offer to carry things for a
teacher or relative. Give your seat to an elderly person, pregnant
woman, or a mother with a little child.
5. Be supportive. Encourage shy classmates to speak in front or
during recitation by listening attentively and refrain from teasing or
making side comments. Tell your younger sister or brother if he or
she is good at something and offer suggestions for improvement.
2. Your classmate lost his water jug which was a gift from his
grandmother. He looks so worried.

LESSON 9: COMPASSION
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
a. To understand what it means to be compassionate.
b. To identify acts of compassion around them.
c. To practice compassion in the classroom.
DISCUSSION:
We see different types of people in our society. Some are
lucky for having abundant blessings they enjoy in life. Others are
just contented living simple lifestyle and a large number try hard to
survive. Another type is the unfortunate less privileged group living
in horrible conditions. They are the poor, the oppressed,
abandoned, the sick and the
outcast.
Compassion is a sympathetic
pity and concern for the sufferings
or misfortunes of others coupled
with the wish to relieve it.
A compassionate person
would do such things like visiting
the sick, listening to someone
who’s heartbroken or troubled, or
a lending hand to someone who
feels helpless. A person of compassion is someone who anyone
can go to or rely on especially during moments when one feels low.
One is blessed to have a friend who does not run out of
compassion.
TIPS TO DEVELOP A COMPASSIONATE SPIRIT
1. Begin by opening your senses to what is happening around you.
2. Notice if someone seems to be lonely, troubled, or not feeling
well.
3. Empathize or put yourself in the shoes of that person and ask
yourself how you would feel in the same situation.
DISCUSSION:
How do you think other people would feel when you help
them or when you give something to them? How would you feel if
you were in their place?
Charity comes from
the Latin word caritas.
According to Saint Thomas
Aquinas, charity is “the
friendship of man for God,”
which “unites us to God.” He
said that it is “the most
excellent of the virtues.” He
also believed that habit of
charity extends not only to
love of God, but also to the
love of neighbor.” Charity
begins with the act of giving.
It could be the giving of
resources like food, toys, clothes, and other material gifts. More
than that charity is a giving of time and energy. What you have you
given in the name of charity? Where do you learn charitable?
You often the phrase “Charity begins at home.” Where else
can you first learn acts of charity except in your own homes?
Charity is a joyful sharing of blessing, time, and talents to
someone in need without expecting anything in return. It entails
self-giving for the service of others. It is characterized by selfishness
and sacrifice. You show that you are willing to do something for the
another person’s well-being.
9. Only the rich people have the capacity to help the needy.
ACTIVITY 3: Save and Give. Decide on what you are ready to save
to give to charity. How much will you put inside this charity. How
much will you put inside this charity jar on a daily basis? Which
group of people would you give your savings to? Why? Write your
plan below.
