For the girls
International Women's Day, a
day marked to celebrate the
women's rights movement,
hhas just passed. On that day 1
took time to think about the
women in my life who inspite
me. My mother, grandmother,
‘and several close friends are all
strong characters, not afraid to
stand up for what is right
"thought of my favourite
novelists, who write complex
{and intoresting famalo
characters that push the
boundaries of gender
stereotypes, the likes of
Ottessa Moshfegh, Eliza Clark,
and AS King. They all show
how writing has such an impact
fon gendered dialogue
‘As girls grow up they are
exposed to mixed messaging,
telling them to change, to
love themselves, to have body
neutrality, and to pay for the
way society wants thom to
look. All this can bring about
serious mental health issues,
Inmy role, what | write and
eit will be read by thousands
of people, the majority being
women, Therefore. | aim to be
constantly mindful of how my
words may impact a reader,
and whethor they enfores
harmful gender stereotypes, or
encourage positive change,
Along with that, | need to
be aware that, as women, we
can, sometimes, enable the
discrimination of other women
simply to survive, whether that
bbe socially or in the workplace,
My ongoing goal isto not
allow this to happen, and lke
to think other women support
the samo goal
‘As women we must strive
to uplift each othor and work
together to make, at the very
least, our corner of the world
more equal

A RICH MARITIME
HISTORY
Lyttelton ‘will come to life’ with the inaugural ITM New Zealand Sail Grand
Prix Christchurch, on 18-19 March 2023. The event won't be the first major
regatta on the harbour, as Haydn Rawstron explains.
ix months after the First Four
Canterbury Association ships
arrived at Lyttelton, the steadily
‘growing settlement held its
first sporting event, a regatta in
the hatbour.it marked Guesn
Victoria's 52nd birthday, Saturcay,
24 May 1851.
Charlotte Godley described the
Colebrations at length in a letter home to
hher mother in Wales: the day was actually
‘too lovely, not a breath of wind all dey,
0 that the sailing boots never started
Instead, the Regatta [sic] consisted solely
of boat aces’
The first match was for Tive-oared whale
boats, four of which were Maori boats:
‘and-oarsmen. ‘Only one white crew pulled
‘against them’ and it was easily beaten. The
‘MBor! accomplished the feat in remarkably
short time and came in very fresh, and in
‘reat delight’
Charlotte continues: The Victoria won,
belonging to a chief, whe did nat go in her,
but walked up and down, telling people he
‘was just lke Mr. Godley, and only looked on.
Her effervescent account of the various
races and events reveals that MBit
{and Pakeh8 were both participants and
spectators in the overall entertainment,
a day of mutual celebration in games,
feasting, and dancing. She summed up, ‘in
short it was very successful, and everyone
‘thoroughly tired next day’,no one probably
‘mora so than her litte son, Arthur.

Boats, models of boats and stories of
boats were his passion during his two years
intyttelton.
‘The 1851 regatta reveals positive,
relations between Maori and Pakehs,
shaped possibly by the cauldron-ik reality,
of Lyttelton Harbour, in which Lyttelton
was the centre of Canterbury social ie
Constant dally contact occurred between
the two cultures, helping mould together
the native and the newcomer in the infant
Canterbury, in a way that was never again
emulated, once ‘Canterbury’ departed over
the hills and far away, Its why we should all
treasure those formativo years in Lyttelton
‘90ing forward, and research them widely.
The movingly all-inclusive, communal
celebration of regatta day’ in 1851, perhaps
offers inspiration for Lyttelton throughout
the rest of this year. This month, for
instance, one can also celebrate the 175th
anniversary of the choosing of names for
the now settlement and its principal town
‘Canterbury’ and ‘Christchurch

General and founder’ of the
Settlement. Education was at
the forefront ofthe vision for
Canterbury together with moral
responsiblity, and these qualities
are refiected in the names,
themselves. At the time of that
March 1848 meeting, membership
of the Canterbury Association
totalled 50 bishops, noblemen
and gentlemen, a remarkable
collection of responsibilty,
education, and culture, All wore

THIS YEAR SEES TWO FURTHER
LYTTELTON-RELATED ANNIVERSARIES.
1) The three Canterbury Association surveyors
arrived in December 1648, 175 years ago: Thomas
‘Cass who did the frst detailed survey of the
Harbour; Capt. Joseph Thomas, who surveyed
Lyttolton, and his assistant, Charles Torlesse.
2)The 150th anniversary of The University of
Canterbury's founding occurs on 18 June 2023.

The best protection from getting the flu is the annual
flu vaccine, washing hands regularly, and avoiding
Close contact with sick people, You may need antiviral

‘become sick with the flu, staying home from work or
school is important to avoid spreading the virus to others.
There are afew groups who are eligible for froe flu
vaccinations, These include Mori communities ancl
Pacific peoples aged 55 to 64 years, pregnant people

‘and children under four who have experienced
respiratory illness.
Fight the flu this year and come into our Cashel Streat or

you can also book us to come out to your organisation

HAPPINESS
BREATHE DEEPLY
You're tense, your shoulders are tight, and
you feel as though you just might "lose it”
We all know that fealing.
Instinct may tell you to tako a long,
deep breath to calm yourself down, Turns
ut, that instinct is a good one. Research
supports the fact that slow breathing
and deep breathing exercises can help
reduca stress.
If you're having a hard time taking slow,
deliberate breaths, try counting to five in
your head with each inhale and exhale,
[ACKNOWLEDGE THE UNHAPPY MOMENTS.
‘A positive attitude is generally a good
thing, but bad things happen to everyone,
Its just part of life.
Ifyou get some bad news, make a
mistake, or just feel like you're in a funk,
don't try to pretend you're happy.
‘Acknowledge the feeling of unhappiness,
letting yourself experience it for a moment,
Then shift your focus toward what made
you feel this way and what it misht take
to recover,
Would a deep breathing exercise help?
4 Jong walk outside? Talking it over with
Lot the moment pass and take care of
yourself, Remember, no one’s happy all
the time,
GIVE FREELY
Taking the time to help others will make
both them and you happy.
‘Acting with kindness has been found to
Increase the release of oxytocin, “the love
hhormono’, in our brains and that's why we
feel a surge of happiness.
Centuries ago, Plato wrote: “Caring about
the happiness of others, we find our own”
He was right
‘Ask yourself, how can | make someone
‘olse's day bottor today? It can be as simple
as that.
‘DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE EVERY DAY
‘Too often we end up doina what we have
to do, and put off the things we really want
to do.
Make time for what you love. Prioritse,
‘and find the time to do something you love
every day,
‘Write down all the things you love doin,
land what makes you happy, then choose
‘one thing that you can start doing.
FIND REASONS TO LAUGH
Laughter really is the best medicine.
‘Studies have shown that lauchter lowers
‘ur levels of cortisol, the "stress hormone”,
‘boosts our mood, ralioves pain, improves
‘our immune system, and stimulates the
release of endorphins the “feel-good
hormone."
Laughter is good for your health, and
draws you back to the present moment.
You're not thinking about the past or the
future, you're lost in the moment.Heading into Easter, thoughts turn to chocolate, Easter eggs, foil-wrapped bunnies and the like.
