a) Define

i. Principal quantum number.

ion.

ii. State the electronic configuration from the diagram based on increasing energy
level with complete electron fill until 4 / subshell.

c) For Fe (Z=26),

Write the ground state electron configuration for both iron atom and ion (3+).
i. Draw the filled atomic orbital o f the valence electron for each species.
ii. How many unpaired electron spins are in each o f these iron species?

a) At ground state, the valence electronic configuration o f antimony is Sb is 5s^ 5p^


When react with chlorine (or chloride ions), THREE possible chloride compounds o f
antimony can be formed. One o f the compound is SbCls.

i. State and draw the geometrical molecular shape o f SbCls using the VSEPR
theory.

ii. Using the molecular orbital diagram, draw the hybridization o f Sb to form
SbClj.

iii. What are the possible formula and molecular shapes o f the other two chlorides
o f antimony?

b) For the allene molecule, H 2 C=C=CH 2 ,

i. State the types o f hybridization o f all the carbon atoms.

ii. Sketch a picture o f the molecule showing overlapping o f orbitals for the
formation o f all the 71 and o bondings.

c) The atomic number for Boron, B is 5. For a molecule o f boron with formula B 2 ,

i. Draw the molecular orbital energy diagram.

ii. Write down the electronic molecular orbital configuration.

iii. Detemiine the bonding order.

QUESTION 4 (20 MARKS)

a) The research and development unit o f a chemical company is studying the reaction o f
CH4 and H 2 S, two components o f natural gas.

C H 4(g) + 2 H 2 S(g) ^ CS2(g) + 4 H 2(g)

In one experiment, 1.00 mol o f CH 4 , 1.00 mol o f CS 2 , 2.00 mol o f H 2 S and 2.00 mol o f
H 2 are mixed in a 250-mL vessel at 960°C. At this temperature, Kc = 0.036.

i. In which direction will the reaction proceed to reach equilibrium?

ii. If (CH4) = 5.56 M at equilibrium, calculate the equilibrium concetrations o f the


other substances.

b) A hydrogen electrode with hydrogen gas at 1 atm and hydrogen ion at 25°C is suitably
connected to a half-cell consisting o f copper metal immersed in 1.00 M copper(II)
sulfate solution. The measured potential for the cell Pt|H 2 (1 atm) | (1 M) j| Cu^"^
(1 M)| Cu is 0.34V.

i. Sketch a diagram showing an electrolytic cell for the electrolysis o f copper(II)


sulfate solution using inert platinum electrodes.

ii. Write the half-cell reactions with its standard electrode potential for both
reduction and oxidation processes.

c) A voltaic cell houses a recation between aqueous bromine and zinc metal;
