AN INTRODUCTION TO IB CHEMISTRY

MADE FOR STUDENTS TO GET READY FOR IB CHEMISTRY

IB 1 Chemistry Summer Preparation

Hello IB 1 Chemistry Students,

Many of you have studied IGCSE Chemistry for the past 2 years. Some have done CBSE,
some ICSE and others might have done IB MYP or US high school, NGSS or other
science program.

To bring everyone up to the same starting point for mid August 2021 I am sharing a playlist
of online lessons on YouTube along with several practice questions (allocated by lesson)
and a practice test.

Here is the link to the playlist:

Listed below are links to each of the first 10 lessons and this is followed by questions.We
will do a practice test on this during the first week of IB Chemistry in August 2021. Over
summer I will be expanding this playlist beyond 10 videos and the extra lessons are
optional. Once you have completed these lessons and questions send your work to me
by email. Also, ff you have questions as you work on this you can contact me at my school
email: ddubay@cisb.org.in

I look forward to meeting all of you soon.

Stay safe and have good summer.

Mr. Dubay

Lesson 1

1. Draw the Lewis electron dot diagrams

for elements 1-20. Annotate a blank
periodic table with as much information
as you can remember from your
previous studies.
Lesson 2

2. There are two naturally occurring isotopes of copper Cu-63 and Cu-65. The relative
isotopic or atomic mass of Cu-63 is 69.17 and Cu-65 is 30.83. Using this data calculate
the relative atomic mass of copper

Lesson 3

Using the Periodic Table determine the relative formula/molecular mass of each of the
following:

1. (a)Sodium oxide-Na2O

(b) Ethene- C2H4

(c) Ammonium Phosphate- (NH4)3PO4

2.Calculate the number of atoms of hydrogen

in 1 mole of ethene.

3. Calculate the number of atoms in 0.5 moles

of water.

Lesson 4

1.Calculate the volume of 0.25 mol of

nitrogen at SATP

2. Calculate the number of moles of

molecules in 1.2 x10 24 molecules of
hydrogen gas.

3. Calculate the number of moles in 554 dm3

of a gas at STP.

4. Convert 70 degrees C to K.

5. Calculate the number of moles of atoms in 0.5 mol. of ammonia gas (NH3). Write your
answer using standard form or scientific notation.
Lesson 5

1.Calculate the mass in grams of 0.4 mol of

water.

2. 2.00 mol. of a substance have a mass of

117g. Calculate the relative formula mass of
the substance. Include calculations to show
how the units are derived.

3. Calculate the amount in mol. in 250 mL of

0.1 mole dm-3 hydrochloric acid.

4. Calculate the mass in grams of 2.5 moles of calcium oxide (CaO)

5. Calculate the amount of mol. of acid in 25.00 cm3 of 0.13 mol dm-3 HCl.

Lesson 6

1.Draw diagrams and write expressions to

summarise Boyle’s Law, Charles’ Law and
Avogadro’s Law.

2. Write the Ideal Gas Equation

3. Calculate the volume of 2.65 mol of

oxygen at 32.0 degrees celsius and
standard pressure 100.0 kPa. Give your
answer to 3 significant figures.

Lesson 7

1.Write the formula for each of the following by

showing the ions present as shown in the
lesson:

(a) ammonium carbonate

(b) sodium carbonate

(c) Calcium nitrate

(d) aluminium hydroxide

(e) Barium hydroxide

(f) aluminium sulfate

(g) magnesium chloride

(h) lithium oxide

(i) sodium sulfide

Lesson 8

Go to Phet Colorado and get more practice

with balancing equations.

Balance these equations:

1. Fe + H2S04—-> Fe2(SO4)3 + H2

2. C2H6 + O2—-> H2O + CO2

3. KOH + H3PO4—-> K3PO4 + H2O

4. SnO2 + H2—-> Sn + H2O

5. NH3 + O2—-> NO + H2O

6. KNO3 + H2CO3—-> K2CO3 + HNO3

7. B2Br6 + HNO3—-> B(NO3)3 + HBr

8. BF3 + Li2SO3—-> B2(SO3)3 + LiF

Lesson 9
1.Using balanced equation 1 from lesson 9,
predict the volume of hydrogen gas
produced at SATP.

2. Using balanced equation 2 from lesson 9,

predict the volume of carbon dioxide
produced at SATP.

3. In equation 5 of lesson 9, 120.0 L of

oxygen reacted completely with ammonia.
Calculate the volume of ammonia used.
Lesson 10

Use the following data for relative atomic

masses to answer this question: sodium =23.0 g
mol-1 carbon 12.0 g mol-1 oxygen 16.0 g mol-1
hydrogen 1.0 g mol-1, chlorine 35.5 g mol-1

5.30 grams of sodium carbonate react with 200.0

mL of 0.500 mol dm-3 hydrochloric acid.

(a) Write the balanced equation for this reaction

(b) Determine the amount in moles of acid available
(c) Determine the amount in moles of sodium carbonate available
(d) Identify the limiting reagent (reactant)
(e) Calculate the expected yield of sodium chloride in grams
(f) Calculate the expected volume of carbon dioxide gas at SATP
