06 Periodic Table of Elements

My Goals for this Lesson:

● Explain how the periodic table is organized.

● Use the periodic table to obtain information.

What:

How would you arrange the breakfast cereals in a grocery store to make them easier to find?
Try the activity.

Why:

Mendeleev’s Periodic Table

Organizing the elements

How did Mendeleev organize the 63 known elements in his table?

How was he able to “predict” discoveries of elements in the future?

How did the discovery of atomic numbers help to shape the periodic table we have today? Why
was this discovery important?

Modern Periodic Table

What important information is found in today’s periodic table:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Atoms from elements in columns share similar __________ properties, but also tend to react
with other elements in similar ways. Because of these similarities, the columns are also referred
to as “_________.” Scientists can use information from the periodic table to study how elements
_________.

The periodic table shows patterns in the following electron properties

An element’s row number is also the number of:

Valence electrons are located in:

Valence electrons are involved in:

Atoms of elements in the same column share the same number of:

Electronegativity is:

The greater the electronegativity:

An atom's electronegativity increases as you go across from: _______ to ________ on the

periodic table and move _________ the periodic table.

Check out the Periodic Table in the lesson

Describe the general trends you see for the following categories:

Metals/non-metals/metalloids

Electronegativity

Ionization Energy

Atomic Radius

Valence Electrons
Oxidation Number

Use the Periodic table below and show/fill in the following trends on your table:

[Note that the metals/non-metals/Metalloids are already shown]

Electronegativity

Valence Electrons

Representative Elements:

Some groups of elements behave more predictably than others. The elements that behave in a
very predictable way are called ______________ elements. Columns 1-2 and 13-18 are
considered ______________ elements.

Explain why.

Column 1:
Column 2:

Column 17:

Column 18:

Exceptions to the Rule:

What element is an “Exception” to the rule? Why?

Apply:

Use the periodic table to help you complete your online presentation.

For this assessment, you will further investigate an element of your choice. Once you have
chosen your element, you will create a presentation using an online presentation tool.

The web 2.0 tools can be found on your student Dashboard. Once in the web 2.0 tools, go to
the drop down window on the upper right. Scroll down to the “Online Presentation” option at the
bottom of the list. There you will see several recommended tools with descriptions and links to
help you choose the tool that is best for you. If you have another method of presentation that
you would like to use, please consult your instructor for permission prior to completing the
activity.

REQUIRED INFORMATION:

· the name of the element, including an explanation for the origin of its name if that origin is
known
· the chemical symbol, average atomic mass, and atomic number for the element
· the number of valence electrons in a neutral atom of the element
· a description of the element's position on the periodic table, including a list of other
elements that have similar properties (if any)
· a description of where the element is commonly found in nature
· a description of how the element is commonly used by people and what properties make it
appropriate for that use
· if the element is not used by people, explain why
· a list of five compounds the element can form
· identify whether each compound is only naturally occurring, only human–made, or both
naturally occurring and human–made
· a brief description of how the element was discovered, identified, and/or purified
· if scientists are not sure how it was discovered, identified, and/or purified, explain why
· an interesting fact about the element

Be sure to choose reliable resources such as government, scientific, and educational websites.
Document all research in your own words. Be sure to properly site all resources used in your
assignment.

You will submit a presentation on one the element you researched. Make sure to check the
rubric before you submit your work J.
