Connecting Career Dots

Dito isisilid lahat
tagapayo.

Keep in Mind
Suggested Time Allotment: 15 minutes

Career assessment aims to guide the conduct of career guidance at the school
level and to ensure the development of skills and competencies required in the world of work.
The identified job classifications are listed in the National Career Examination
(NCAE) to guide and help you identify the different occupational fields that you may want to
pursue. Learner’s aptitudes and occupational interests are assessed during the conduct of the
NCAE with the aim of providing you with a broader self-awareness.
Every job and career choice are classified in one of those occupational fields. Thus, the
nature of each job determines which field it belongs. More importantly, you will be able to
determine the connection between you and the world of work. Moreover, you need to identify
and explore potentially satisfying occupations based on your interests, skills, values and
personality. Along with these are the aspects that might take part in your career decision-
making. However, its influence on your career decision will only depend on how much you
will allow.
Further, you need to be aware that there are specified cut-off for learners who wish to
pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Strand. Prior to entering
SHS, the aptitude of students in selected programs shall be measured in order to ensure that
they have the potential to complete the program. The final grade both in Science and Math in
Grade 10 should be 85 and above. Learners should also have at least a percentile rank of 86
and above in the STEM subtest in the career assessment exam. Should you wish to pursue
skill-based track and strand, there will be two screenings for the Sports, Arts and Design
Tracks. The first screening will be the results of the career assessment in the corresponding
subtests. Aptitude should be at least a percentile rank of 51 and above. The second screening
for the Sports Track will be done through skills-related fitness tests which will be
administered by the accepting schools. For the Arts and Design Track, the second screening
will be through a performance and skills assessment which will also be administered by the
accepting schools. You have to consider this in adjusting/making your final decisions for
your track and strand to pursue.
Aside from those aspects, there are also different factors that influence your career
choices such as (1) genetic influences from parents like inherited interests, skills and
talents; (2) environmental conditions and events such as your financial conditions,
demands, suggestions of other significant people around you and the influence of your peers
and social media; (3) learning experiences that come from school, exposure to other
people and your own experiences with other professionals

9
and workers; and (4) your homeroom guidance activities and career programs
that lead to your improved job knowledge to help with your career choices.

Learning experiences, especially observational learning stemming from significant

role models like your parents, teachers and models, have a powerful influence on career
decision, making some occupations more attractive than others.
Furthermore, positive modeling, reward and reinforcement will likely lead to the
development of appropriate career planning skills and career behavior.

You Can Do It!
