meaningful responses from readers
Now that you have done taking the pretest, you shall proceed to recalling ideas 2
retained in your mind. In your previous grade levels, you were taught about Literary
writing or creative writing including the elements that are necessary to come up a
with a literary work.

Creative writing is known for utilizing fragments of imaginary detail in the

mind to form a said to be a whole “Literary masterpiece”. Although it is based or
inspired by real life events, creative writing is crafted with the “things made-up” in a
persuasive, sophisticated, and appealing way to be able to reveal a better
understanding of the concept of the part we take place world we live in.

When we speak of creative writing, we mean production of poetry, fiction, and

plays. Therefore, as a writer, it is important that we one must express the emotion
of his heart through writing, knows how to invent ideas that is unique and
incomparable, and finally, has a broad imagination.

“Show don’t tell” could be the main rule in creative writing. For a writer to be
true to this rule, he or she needs to learn to speak its language. That is where
understanding of the concept of diction, denotation and connotation, imagery,
figures of speech, idiomatic expression, and sensory experience come in.

3. INTRODUCTION

CREATIVE WRITING LANGUAGE: Denotation and Connotation

Words have both denotative and connotative meanings. The denotative
meaning of a word is that which is found in the dictionary. It is also known as the
literal meaning of a word. On the other hand, the connotative meaning of a word is
that which is assigned by the writer to a word as it is used in the context of his text.
It is also known as the figurative meaning of a word. For example, the word eye
means “an internal organ of human beings and other organism capable of seeing” or
“the hole in the needle where the thread is inserted”. When the same word is modified
by the word third (as in third eye), the combined words refer to extrasensory
perception (ESP), the word eye has a connotative or denotative meaning.
