COURSE COMPUTATIONAL METHODS FOR ENGINEERS

COURSE CODE CES512/513

LEVEL OF OPENNESS 1
CATEGORY PARTIALLY OPEN
DEGREE OF OPEN-ENDED (%) 33%
PERIOD OF ACTIVITY 1 WEEK

TITLE THE APPLICATIONS OF MATLAB

1.1 Introduction
Level 1 laboratory activity refers to the condition where the problem and
procedure are provided to the student. The student interprets the data in order
to propose viable solutions.

1.2 Objectives

The objective of this activity is:

PREAMBLE To solve a given problem using the right equipment and methodology.
1.3 Learning Outcomes

At the end of the laboratory activities, students would be able to:

 to create matrix (row and column) with certain dimension
(CO2:PO4)
 to create n x n matrix (CO2:PO4)
 to perform matrix mathematical operations (addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division) (CO2:PO4)
 to use special matrix MATLAB command (eye, magic) (CO2:PO4)
 to extract certain element in matrix(CO2:PO4)

2.1 Problem Statement

In this computer laboratory, each student is free to explore the MATLAB

software to learn matrix creation, matrix location registration and operation.
PROBLEM
STATEMENT The present of lecturer/ assistant engineer are compulsory to supervise
and assist students to operate MATLAB in the laboratory.

3.1 Apparatus
Each students will use the MATLAB software and laboratory computers on
creating scalar matrix, vectors and others operations during the lab session.
3.2 Procedures
WAYS & MEANS 1. Create scalar/vectors in MATLAB using suitable variable name
with appropriate dimension
2. Fill out the first column of the created matrix( scalar/vector
location) either by suitable mathematical expression or
numerical values

3. Depending on the problem, use the MATLAB matrix
WAYS & MEANS addition/subtraction/multiplication/division on computing the rest
column values of the matrix on solving the problem. In certain case,
you need to use special MATLAB matrix command to clear the content
of the created matrix variables.
4. Extract the needed position of the matrix to be used for another
computation required on solving the problem.

3.3 Data Acquisition

Data of the problem is given together in the supplementary lab sheet.

4.1 Results, Analysis, Discussion and Conclusion

The individual student will be required to follow the demonstration of
MATLAB software of testing adopted, data acquisition process, analysis
carried out and the relevancy of the set-out output to address the given
RESULTS problem. There is no requirement to write a lab report in this course.
