Speed Notes
-a scalar quantity that refers to "how fast (or slow) an object is moving."
- can be thought of as the rate at which an object covers distance.
- A fast-moving object has a high speed and covers a relatively large distance in a short amount of time. Contrast this
to a slow-moving object that has a low speed; it covers a relatively small amount of distance in the same amount of
time.
-An object with no movement at all has zero speed.
FORMULA
S= d/t
Where: s= speed
d= distance
t= time
EXAMPLE
1. A boy drives a car 150 miles for 3 hours. Calculate the car’s speed in mi/s.
Given:
d – 150 miles
t – 3 hours
Solution:
APPLICATION
1. You need to pee for the next period, you are given 30 seconds to run, pee and go back to class. Your position
relative to the CR is 10 meters in total. You need to find out how fast you must be in order to successfully execute
your plan. Using the formula, you divide distance over time and arrive to 3 m/s. In one swift motion, you dart out the
room with your newfound knowledge. Relieve yourself vigorously, sprint back to the halls and appear at your original
destination. Mission successful!
2. Speedometer
-a device used to measure the traveling speed of a vehicle, usually for the purpose of maintaining a
sensible pace.
- With its help, we can control the speed on the dashboard, to be in line with speed limits.
