Landings Concrete Airfields Durable, Solid, Safe ANC Pavement Association Mi American Concrete ‘CONCRETE AIRFIELDS Concrete pavement is the ideal surface for airport runways, faxiways, and aprons. Concrete is strong, safe, resilient— well-suited for the rigors of airport operations, regardless of size. Concrete’ surface texture and strength make concrete pavement safer than other surfaces and requires minimal maintenance throughout its operational life. Durability Concrete is a very rigid material that supports constant airport traffic while maintaining its surface integrity. In fact, concrete pavements reserve load capacity exceeds specific design requirements. In most cases the actual strength of concrete is at least 10% above the specified design strength. This factor is important and can be a key element when considering expanded operations in the future. Versatility Because of its strength, concrete pavement is an extremely versatile surface material. In many instances, pavements designed for smaller aircraft (12,500 Ib or 5,670 kg) can be built directly on subgrade. Visibility Runway visibility for pilots, air controllers and ground crews is a critical safety feature at any airport. This is particularly true at smaller airports that do not have advanced electronic aids and lighting systems. Because of its naturally light color, concrete is highly reflective, providing excellent visibility in a variety of conditions. Traction More than any other surface material, concrete pavement provides optimum traction between tire and pavement, which minimizes aircraft skidding and hydroplaning, making airports safer. And concrete’s inherent strength and durability keep surface textures intact despite heavy traffic or extreme weather conditions. Heat Resistance Higher air temperatures near the runway surface can adversely affect aircraft wing lift and power characteristics. Unlike darker surfaces, concrete’s light color actually minimizes the build-up of superheated air over the runway surface. Less Maintenance Concrete surfaces require very little maintenance during their operational life. Some runway materials need periodic resurfacing, resulting in runway closures and air traffic delays. By contrast, concrete runways last longer and maintain surface integrity longer, thus minimizing the need for expensive and time consuming maintenance. CONCRETE RUNWAYS TAXIWAYS APRONS Resists degradation due to fuel spillage, oil drippings, jet heat and jet blast Reflects light for excellent runway visibility Prevents rutting under the weight of moving and parked aircraft Minimizes aircraft skidding or hydroplaning Minimizes superheated air layers above the pavement surface Eliminates periodic resurfacing or surface sealing Provides additional strength/load carrying capacity For more information on the advantages of concrete pavement for airports, contact the: American Concrete Pavement Association www.pavement.com Sonn CO Oy, . o>, American Concrete i cr : Pavement Association Chicago Washington 5420 Old Orchard Road 1010 Massachusetts Ave., NW Suite A 100 Suite 200 Skokie, Illinois 60077-1059 Washington, DC 20001 Phone: 847.966.2272 Phone: 202.842.1010 PAI79P.
