Women Entrepreneurship

The process of creating and operating a business or enterprise by a woman is known

as women's entrepreneurship. It contributes significantly to economic growth and is
essential in generating wealth and employment. In the modern economy, women
entrepreneurs are playing a bigger role and contributing significantly in fields like
science, technology, finance, and other industries.
Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), commonly referred to as the Global
Goals, were approved by the United Nations in 2015 as an international call to action
to eradicate poverty, safeguard the environment, and guarantee that by 2030
everyone can live in peace and prosperity.
The 17 SDGs are cohesive; they acknowledge that actions in one area will have an
impact on results in others and that sustainable development must strike a balance
between social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
SDG related to Women's Entrepreneurship
Among the 17 SDGs, numbers 4, 5, and 10 are the most relevant to women's
entrepreneurship. The goal that is directly related to this is goal 5, “GENDER
EQUALITY”.
GENDER EQUALITY
Ending all discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right,
but it’s also crucial for a sustainable future; it's been proven that empowering women
and girls helps economic growth and development. UNDP has made gender equality
central to its work, and we’ve seen remarkable progress in the past 20 years.
Goals Targets
● End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere

● Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and
private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of
exploitation

● Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage, and
female genital mutilation

● Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of
public services, infrastructure, and social protection policies and the
promotion of shared responsibility within the household and the family as
nationally appropriate

● Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for
leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public
life
● Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive
rights as agreed in accordance with the Programme of Action of the
International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing
Platform for Action and the outcome documents of their review conferences

● Undertake reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, as well

as access to ownership and control over land and other forms of property,
financial services, inheritance, and natural resources, in accordance with
national laws

● Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and

communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women

● Adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the
promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at
all levels
Successful implementation of the targets
1. Strengthen the legal framework: The Government of Bangladesh should
strengthen the legal framework, which includes legislation and policies, to
promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. This should include the
ratification and implementation of international treaties, such as CEDAW and
the Beijing Platform for Action.

2. Enhance access to quality education: The government should invest in quality

education to ensure that girls and women have access to education at all
levels. This includes increasing access to secondary and tertiary education
and providing girls with scholarships, as well as providing incentives for
parents to send their daughters to school.

3. Increase women’s access to financial resources: Access to financial resources

is essential for women’s empowerment and economic development. The
government should implement policies to reduce the gender gap in access to
financial services and ensure that women have access to microfinance and
other financial products.

4. Increase women’s access to political participation: The government should take

steps to increase women’s political participation and representation in
decision-making positions. This includes increasing the number of women in
elected office and providing more opportunities for women to participate in
decision-making processes.
5. Promote gender-sensitive media: The government should promote
gender-sensitive media coverage and encourage media outlets to report on
issues related to gender equality. This includes reporting on the successes
and challenges of women in Bangladesh, as well as highlighting the
importance of gender equality.

6. Strengthen the implementation of existing laws: The government should

strengthen the implementation of existing laws and policies related to gender
equality, such as laws on domestic violence, sexual harassment, and equal
pay for equal work. This should include creating an effective monitoring
system to ensure that these laws are enforced.

7. Enhance access to healthcare: The government should invest in healthcare and

ensure that girls and women have access to quality healthcare. This includes
providing maternal health services, as well as ensuring that women have
access to contraceptives.

8. Promote gender-sensitive development policies: The government should

promote gender-sensitive development policies and ensure that women’s
rights and interests are taken into account in all development projects. This
includes making sure that the benefits of development projects are distributed
equally among men and women.
