4.2 Configuration Process

Fig. 9 Configuration process

On the SMC, devices (MCUs and participant endpoints) consist of manageable and
unmanageable devices:

1) Manageable devices: These devices support online configuration, updates, backup,

and configuration restoration.

2) Unmanageable devices: These devices are resources for conference scheduling

but do not support online configuration, updates, backup, or configuration restoration.

If an MCU is a manageable version, it can be automatically detected by the SMC. If a

participant endpoint is a manageable version, it can be predefined on or automatically
detected by the SMC.

1) Auto detect

A device on which the SMC IP address is defined as the trap address automatically
sends a trap message to the SMC using SNMP. The SMC administrator can then add this

device to the SMC.

2) Predefinition

Page 12 of 92
SMC2.0 Lab Guide

The SMC administrator predefines parameters for a participant on the SMC. When
the participant endpoint is initialized and has its trap address set to the SMC IP address,
the endpoint automatically synchronizes the settings from the SMC.

4.5 Setting a Device Configuration Template

 Background

There are two template types: MCU and participant.

You can identify different template types by naming the templates, for example 9xxx
MCU, 8xxx MCU, H.323 participant, and SIP participant. When adding several devices of
the same type, using a configuration template can simplify your operations. Moreover,
using the template can protect the parameter settings on the device against manual
changes. If any parameter set on a device is inconsistent with that specified in the
configuration template, the SMC can change the parameter value to be the same as that
in the template during the SMC's periodical check.

 Prerequisites

The device is manageable. Specifically, the device can communicate using SNMP.
The parameters to be set on the device are the same as those in the template.

 Procedure

Step 1 Log in to the SMC Web interface;

Step 2 Choose Devices > Template Management, click Add, the New Device

Configuration Template dialog box is displayed;

4.7 Configuring a Participant

 Background

A participant is composed of videoconferencing endpoints, microphones, and

cameras to collect and process audio and video in a videoconferencing system.You can
add a participant using any of the following methods:

1) Predefine a participant (predefinition mode).

predefine the participant parameters on the SMC. After the participant endpoint is
deployed and has its IP and trap addresses configured, the SMC automatically adds the
participant endpoint and updates the predefined parameter settings to the participant
endpoint.

2) Auto detect mode

This mode applies especially when you must add multiple participants whose
endpoint IP addresses you do not know. A participant endpoint on which the SMC IP
address is defined as the trap address automatically sends a trap message to the SMC.
When the SMC detects the participant endpoint, the SMC administrator can manually add
the participant to the SMC.

3) Manageable mode

This mode applies when you must add a small number of participants whose
endpoint IP addresses you have obtained. On the SMC, you can search for a participant
by its endpoint IP address and add it as a manageable participant.

4) Unmanageable mode

This mode applies when you must add a small number of participants whose
endpoint IP addresses you have obtained and the endpoints are unmanageable versions.

4.7.1 Predefining a Participant

 Predefining a Participant on the SMC

Step 1 Log in to the SMC Web interface;

4.8.4 Schedule a Cascading Conference

 Cascading service
The cascading service can be used in the following scenarios:

1) A single MCU does not provide sufficient port resources. When the number of
participants is greater than the number of ports on a single MCU, two MCUs can be
cascaded to host the conference.

2) The line bandwidth is insufficient.

When two MCUs are cascaded, the bandwidth for as little as one access endpoint is
required.

3) Area management is involved.

When MCUs are cascaded, they can be distributed in different administrative

divisions to facilitate management.

The following methods are available for implementing cascading:

1) Automatic cascading

Schedule a conference, and the SMC2.0 will set up cascaded channels between
MCUs in different service areas.

2) Manual cascading

Page 46 of 92

5.4 Configuring a Neighboring GK

 Background

The GK route table contains prefixes of the neighboring GKs for a local GK. When the

local GK detects that a called number starts with the prefix of a neighboring GK in the GK

route table, the local GK asks the neighboring GK to resolve the called number. After

resolution, the neighboring GK returns the IP address of the called device to the local GK,

and the local GK forwards the device IP address to the calling device. Then the call is set

up between the calling and called parties.

On large-scale videoconferencing networks where the embedded GK cannot meet

site requirements, you can deploy neighboring GKs to address the issue.

 Prerequisites

You have obtained the IP address and prefix of the neighboring GK you wish to

configure.

 Procedure

Step 1 Log in to the SMC Web interface;

Step 2 Choose Devices > GK, the GK page is displayed;

Page 90 of 92
SMC2.0 Lab Guide

Step 3 Click Embedded GK, the Embedded GK page is displayed;

Fig. 144 Embedded GK page

Step 4 Click Neighboring GK List and then Add, the Add Route dialog box is

displayed;

Fig. 145 Add Route dialog box

Step 5 From the Type (Content) drop-down list box, select the desired value. Fill in

Prefix/Suffix and GK IP address. Retain the default value for RAS port. Click Save.

Note

1) A single route corresponds to one prefix for a neighboring GK and can be used to
resolve numbers starting with this prefix only. To add several prefixes of the neighboring
GK to the GK route table, you must add several routes corresponding to these prefixes.

2) When the security type is set to Do not support H.235, you simply need to specify
the parameters marked in the red rectangle in Figure 4-18. When the security type is set
to Support H.235, you must set two additional parameters: GK ID and Key. Add the

Page 91 of 92

neighboring GK's ID on the local GK and the local GK's ID on the neighboring GK. The
key set on both GKs must be the same.

3) If both GKs are on the same private network, select Private network route.

Operating Results
Please confirm the above steps have been executed correctly.
