USP HIstory
FFLCH – History and Geography Building

Inaugurated in 1964, the History and Geography Building,

or the History and Geography Gap for intimates, was
designed by architect Eduardo Corona. Graduated from
the FAU, Corona was invited, in the early 60s, by the
executive director of the USP Construction Fund, Paulo de
Camargo e Almeida, to start the construction of a building
that aimed, through its architecture, to expand university
life.

Considered the first building in the Human Sciences

sector, the History and Geography building is established
from a large central hall where the circulation ramps are
located. In
reinforced concrete, the building has a large space on the
ground floor used as a social space. In 1967, it received
the IAB Award in the category of buildings constructed in
the educational buildings sector

Today, the FFLCH gap is a meeting point for students and

one of the main venues for university parties and
assemblies.

USP HIstory
The Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library

It is an important library created in January 2005 to house

and integrate the Brazilian collection gathered over more
than eighty years by the bibliophile José Mindlin and his
wife Guita. The couple, passionate about books, donated
to the university the mission and grace of housing the
largest private collection in Brazil: around 17,000 titles and
40,000 volumes.

This Library, in accordance with its bylaws, is committed to

conserving, disseminating and facilitating access to the
collection by students, researchers and the general public,
and promoting the dissemination of studies on Brazilian
subjects through specific programs and projects. In this
sense, it has acted as an interdisciplinary center for
documentation, research and scientific dissemination of
Brazilian studies, book culture, information technology
and digital humanities, becoming an integration body for
various academic initiatives of intersectoral interest. and
transdisciplinary.

USP HIstory
Praça do Relógio

Praça do Relógio was built to be a central point for the

university city of USP, becoming a place for meetings or
passage to other parts of the campus. The main highlight of
the square is its central clock, which is an important
architectural monument for the campus. This is because, in
addition to being a building that, by itself, already highlights
the Square, it also represents the university world itself. In
the sculptural project developed by Elisabeth Nobiling, then
professor of Plastics at FAU, there is a set of twelve drawings
that represent the main areas of study at the University.

The “world of fantasy” is on the side facing the former

rectory, with representations of poetry, social sciences,
economic sciences, dance, music and theater, architecture
and plastic arts and philosophy. On the other side, towards
the new rectory, we have engravings of what would be the
“world of reality”, symbolizing astronomy, chemistry,
biological sciences, physics, geological sciences and
mathematics.

As the base of the two towers, there is a water mirror which,

around it, expresses an idea that represents what the
construction designers wanted with the clock. The phrase “In
the universe of culture, the center is everywhere”, uttered by
the rector of USP in the 1950s, Miguel Reale, represents the
notion that Praça do Relógio would be the central point of
university experience.

About São Paulo

SPSAS-Bicentennial School is located in São Paulo, capital of
the state of São Paulo. With nearly 11 million inhabitants,
equivalent to 6% of the Brazilian population, São Paulo is the
fourth most populous city in the world and South America’s
largest. Located in Southeastern Brazil, along with 38 other
municipalities, it ranks among the world's biggest
metropolitan areas, home to nearly 20 million people.
São Paulo is the most important financial and economic
center of Brazil and of South America. Contributing to more
than 10% of Brazil's GDP and to about 35% of the state of
São Paulo's, it is the world's 19th richest city. According to a
PwC study, it may grow 80% over the next 15 years, climbing
to the 13th position in this ranking by 2020. The city
generates as much wealth as Chile, Latin America's fifth
largest country, which places it among the 50 biggest
economies of the world.
The city hosts 26 universities — three of them public — and
other 146 higher education institutions that ensure the
education and training of a specialized labor force. It is the
45th best academic city in the world according to QS, the
British group responsible for one of the most important
annual classification of universities, Top Universities.
Besides being an important economic, academic and
financial hub, São Paulo is also one of the main centers for
new trends, culture and entertainment in Brazil, with a wide
diversity of museums, theaters, cinemas, parks, restaurants,
nightclubs, and similar establishments.

About Ipiranga Museum

Reopened to the public in September 2022, the Ipiranga
Museum plays a central role in the celebrations of the
Bicentennial of Independence, in particular through the
exhibition “Memories of Independence”, which brings
different readings and regional narratives about the same
phenomenon. It is in this context that the School emerges
as an opportunity to debate in depth the process of the
Independence of Brazil from different perspectives.

On Buses: Buses don’t use tickets so you need to pay the

fare directly to the bus driver or fare collector, it depends on
the bus line you are taking. Some bus lines have a fare
collector that sits next to the bus’ turnstile and you need to
pay the fare for him. Other lines don’t have a fare collector
and so you need to pay the fare directly to the bus driver.

After entering on a bus, look at the turnstile – which is

usually located in the middle of the bus and see whether
there is some fare collector sitting next to it. If there is, so
you pay the fare to him, if not, you pay for the bus driver.
After paying the fare, the bus driver or the fare collector will
reliase the turnstile for you to pass. You need to pass the
turnstile because it’s forbidden to go down by the bus’s front
door, so you need to pass it to go down by the bottom door.

It is only possible to pay the fare on buses with cash, so you

need to have coins and notes handy before taking a bus. The
maximum change given by the bus driver/fare collector is R$
20,00, so having small notes and coins in handy is a good
practice.
