PHILIPPINE ART

- TIMELINE

PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD (900-1521)
FEATURES & PHILOSOPHY
- The period when our indigenous ancestors
inhabited the Philippines and the time before the
coming of our first colonizers.

- Pre-Colonial art in this period was preserved


through everyday activities which includes:
1. Fishing
2. Farming
3. By a community's particular decorative art
style.

- Early indigenous people exchange aesthetics and


creative methods with Chinese and other Asian
nations that they frequently travel to as traders.
PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD (900-1521)
Art was expressed in this period through:

- putting drawing or decorative patterns on the wall rocks


or wood to show their religious symbols either animistic
or Islam Based.

- Expressing works which are relevant with their daily


activities like fishing and farming.

- Making stone weapons, jewelry and decorative crafts out


of stone.

- Making their own shelter which has an alphabet called


"Baybayin".

They also have tattoos as ornamentation and rite of


passage.
AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD (1899-1940)

FEATURES & PHILOSOPHY


- The arrival of the Americans lead to a new wave of nationalism in Philippine society which is
best reflected in the art of Fernando Amorsolo. Traditional folk scenes were emphasized in the
artwork of the time as an expression of the imagined sense of nationhood. Traditional
practices, hobbies, and professions are some of the most recognizable motifs used.
AMERICAN COLONIAL PERIOD (1899-1940)
- The paintings theme in this period are landscapes, still
life and portraits are reserve for official with high ranks.

- They also brought Art Nouveau style (an architecture


design prominent to Western Europe).

Americans brought education to the Philippines. That's


why the following schools were build:

1. University of the Philipines Diliman


2. Siliman University
3. Central Philippine University

- Education is more accessible in this period than the


Spanish Colonial Period where the rich people can only
study.

- Filipinos were taught by the Thomasites. The American


influence can be mostly on architecture and literature
because of education.
POST-COLONIAL PERIOD (1946-1969)

FEATURES & PHILOSOPHy


- Also regarded as the Philippine Modern Art
Era, this period is characterized by public
works of art that are contemporary,
conservative, and experimental and are
influenced by Western movements such as
pop art, minimalism, expressionism,
abstraction, constructivism, magic realism,
and environmental art.
POST-COLONIAL PERIOD (1946-1969)

- Also known as the Philippine Modern Art Era

- Arts in this period are modern, conservative and


experimental public art.

- Evident Influences of Western styles like pop art,


maximalism, minimalism, abstraction,
expressionism, constructivism, magic realism, and
environmental art.

CONTEMPORARY ART PERIOD
(1970-PRESENT)
FEATURES & PHILOSOPHY
- Abstraction, expressionism, social
realism, and mixed media art
prevailed throughout this period.
Filipino artists also engage in
interactive art-making. Visual and
performance art may occasionally be
blended to address a topic or express
a viewpoint.
CONTEMPORARY ART PERIOD
(1970-PRESENT)
- Art is utilized to raise awareness as well as
for aesthetic and entertainment purposes.

Art can also be utilized as a form of protest or


as a way to communicate one's sentiments
about a particular issue in society or the
government through editorial illustrations.

Due to technology and the freedom of speech


and expression that the Filipino people now
embrace, new creative forms including digital
art, photography, junk art, and even miniature
sculptures made out of pencil tips have
emerged.
