WEEK 2 LESSON

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students will
1. identify the tenets in the study of Art Appreciation
2. describe the different art forms
3. identify the different functions of art
4. discuss the three approaches to art appreciation
5. define art
6. appraise an art form in terms of the tenets and functions of art

ACTIVATE
Take a good look at the following art forms
a. visual arts- painting, sculpture, architecture, photos

b. literature- sample poetry, titles of novels

c. Music- indigenous, modern, contemporary


d. performance art- pictures of performing artists

e. film- titles of popular films

f. dance- video clip of traditional and contemporary dance

g. applied arts- advertisements


Process Questions:
a. Which art forms do you appreciate more? Explain your choice.
b. What do you look for in an art form?

ACQUIRE
I. Assumptions and Nature of Art
1. Tenets in the study of Art Appreciation
a. art works are expressions of personal experience of beauty
b. art works are expressed in symbols
c. symbols are structured in certain orders following universal principles
d. These orders can be restructured using the same universal principles

Process Questions:
a. How are the tenets manifested in the different art forms?
b. Are these tenets relevant to life? How?

2. Exploration of the different forms of art


a. visual arts
b. literature
c. music
d. performance art
e. film
f. dance
g. applied arts (eg. graphic design, fashion design)

a. Give an example of each of the art form. Provide one sentence annotation for each
b. What do you find similar across the different art forms?
c. What do you find unique in each art form?

II. Functions of Art


1. aesthetic function- to beautify or transform a space
2. didactic function – to be a medium for teaching
3. communicative function- to communicate meaning
4. practical function – to be of practical use like furniture, gadgets.
5. psychological function – to evoke reactions
6. religious function – to be used in worship
7. socio political function – to be vehicle for national symbols and meaningful undertakings.

a. Which kind of art do you find very relevant and useful today?
b. If you were to use any art form, what purpose will you do it for?

III. Approaches in the study of art


1. Definition- identifying the parameters that make up art. Eg. Plato, Aristotle, Kant
2. Skeptical Understanding- Art can’t be defined Eg. Derrida and Weitz
3. Context- to understand art is to consider its background. Eg. Feminist art, Marxist art

Process Questions:
a. Which approach do you classify the way you appreciate art? Why?
b. Which of the three do you find helpful to understand art better?
c. How would you define art?

ACTIVITIES
Art Appraisal- Research further about Coconut Palace. Make one paragraph annotation about
the structure using at least three functions of art.

• Short Essay on the tenets in the study of art appreciation applied on a chosen art
form- Choose one art form. Make a short commentary about it using the tenets discussed

• Art Appraisal- refer to the activity for the instruction. Write your answers using default
format of Word (Microsoft Office) and submit it via BB Learn.
