2.3 Features
1. Type diversification
Liebert.PEX series AC is classified into air cooled series and water cooled series in terms of the cooling mode. Each
series is further classified into upflow type and downflow type in terms of the airflow mode. The diversified modes can
adjust to different installation and operation environments.
The water cooled series uses the plate heat exchanger with high performance, featuring compact structure, high
energy efficiency and low noise pollution to the outdoor environment.
The air cooled series can select Liebert.PEX condenser or Liebert low temperature outdoor unit CD(D)F_S series (low
temperature outdoor unit for short) according to the field conditions.
Liebert.PEX condenser is a new outdoor unit which features stable structure, low noise, stepless speed variation,
corrosion resistance aluminum structure, three-phase power supply and high efficiency; The low temperature outdoor
unit can reduce the noise pollution to the minimum while meeting the system cooling requirement. In addition, it can
modulate the system pressure and adjust to the lower outdoor temperature through the combined control of the fan
speed controller and the temperature switch.
2. Precision control
Liebert.PEX series AC can control the temperature and humidity accurately. The temperature and humidity can be set
to ±1°C and ±1%RH respectively.
3. High energy efficiency
Liebert.PEX series AC uses Copeland scroll compressor with high performance, unique V-shaped finned tube heat
exchanger, carefully designed liquid distributing and more rational inner distribution. Such design achieves more
evenly distributed air flow and more reasonably distributed refrigerant, greatly improving the heat exchanging
efficiency of the heat exchanger, and making AC unit more energy efficient.
4. Convenience and durability
Durable components, compact structure and low profile design; Unique frame secured with carbon steel rivets, is not
only stable and firm but can also dismantled easily for transportation in extreme conditions.; The frame contains two
layers, inside layer and outside layer, with fire insulation asbestos in between, contributing to good insulation
performance; The structures of one bay, two bay and three bay can be used by many conditions, and they reduce the
specification of some components consumed easily (for example drainer).
5. Infrared humidification
The Liebert.PEX series AC adopts an advanced infrared humidification technology to reduce the dependence on water
quality. The humidity control will be more precise and quicker.
6. Compatibility with green refrigerant
The system is compatible with R407C, to suit the international requirement on green refrigerant.
7. Multiple protections
Perfect automatic alarm and diagnosis function provide all-around protections for the AC unit effectively, prevent faults,
locate the faults more quickly and ultimately prolong the life span of the system.
8. Easy maintenance
The front doors make all components accessible from the front and save space. The maintenance of compressor,
plate heating exchanger and strainer, which adopt Rotalock connection model, is easy.
Evaporator
The finned tube evaporator with high heat dissipation efficiency, The distributor designed specifically for each model
makes sure that the refrigerant is distributed evenly in each loop.
Thermal expansion valve
The thermal expansion valve with external equalizer (as shown in Figure 2-5) can automatically regulate the flow of
refrigerant according to the operation condition of refrigeration system when the ambience temperature changes and
optimize the performance of unit.
Fan
The centrifugal fan of high performance and reliability is shown in Figure 2-6. It drives by the belt and features big
airflow, long distance, long airflow distance, easy disassembly and convenient maintenance. The over heat protecting
device can protect the motor effectively. The advanced no air flow protection can sense the reduce of airflow that
results from abnormal operation of the belt or motor and stop the refrigeration, heating or humidifying, with generating
the alarm signal.
Sight glass
The sight glass is the window of system cycle. You can observe the state of refrigerant and detect the moisture content
of system. The color will change from green to yellow, when the moisture content of system exceeds.
Filter drier
The filter drier (as shown in Figure 2-7) can effectively eliminate the moisture in refrigeration system. At the same time
it can filter out the impurity in system and make sure that the system can operate normally.
Infrared humidifier
The infrared humidifier (as shown in Figure 2-8) is controlled by the microprocessor. It features simple structure and
easy for disassembly, cleaning and maintenance. The quartz light, hanged over the moistening water pan of stainless
steel, eradiate the far ultrared ray and ultrared ray. In 5 ~ 6 minutes, these rays make the water molecule absorb the
辐射能 to cast off the strain of water and evaporate on the state of purity. The application of infrared humidifier
reduces the dependence on water quality. And the function of automatic swashing makes the water pan cleaner.
Heater element
The screw finned U type heater is made of stainless steel (as shown in Figure 2-9). Its radiating speed is quick, and
the thermal value is even. The thermal value doesnot only keep the dry bulb temperature, but also compensate the
temperature drop caused by dehumidifying to make the lower surface temperature of heater to prevent the air from
forming ionization and prolong its using life.
LCD screen
The microprocessor of Liebert.PEX series AC adopts 128 × 64 dot matrix, blue backlight LCD screen to display the
present temperature, humidity, setting value, the percentage graph of unit output (fan, compressor, refrigeration,
heating, desiccation, and humidity) and alarm information. You can browse or set all setting values, event records,
graph data, sensor data and alarm setting through the screen. The backlight of LCD screen is designed for saving
energy. If there is not key operation over some time (the factory default is 5 minutes, configured by the menu), the
backlight will be off. Once any key is pressed, the backlight is on.
Microprocessor
The advanced microprocessor makes Liebert.PEX series AC control the temperature and humidity of the machine
room accurately. Its features are as follows:
z Easy operation interface, multiple code protection to prevent unlawful operation.
z The controller has the restoration of a power-down and high, low voltage protection function.
z Getting the operating time of important components by the menu.
z Malfunction diagnosis system of expert class can automatically display the present malfunction information to
make the maintenance easy.
z 400 historical records, the type contains MESSAGE, WARNING and ALARM.
z RS485 interface. Adopting the communication protocol of industry information department.
The microprocessor can monitor and configure the following parameters:
z Temperature: temperature setting value, the range is 5°C ~ 40°C.
z Humidity: humidify setting value, the range is 20%RH~80%RH.
z Humidity control: humidify controlling model selected, the model contains Pred, Comp, Rel.
z Air temperature limit enabling: Enable and Disable can be selected.
z Air temperature limit: the setting value, the range is 5°C ~ 25°C.

This chapter introduces the piping for refrigerant tubing system, water cooled units and air cooled units, as well as the
connection of controller.
5.1.1 General
The water cooled system requires no outdoor unit. The piping for the refrigerant is required for the indoor unit and
outdoor unit of the air cooled system. The general arrangement diagram of the refrigeration system is shown in Figure
5-1.

It is the installer’s responsibility to confirm that the equivalent length of refrigerant line is appropriate for site conditions
and decide the connection type. The equivalent length of lines should include the allowance for all kinds of bends.
Please refer to the principles as follows.
1. Consult the factory before installation whether measures like adding extended pipe assembly should be taken, if the
equivalent length of single line exceeds 30m, or the vertical difference between the indoor unit and outdoor unit
exceeds the values in Table 5-1.
Table 5-1 The verticla difference between indoor unit and outdoor unit
Indoor unit above Max. :+20m
Outdoor unit above Max. : -5m
2. The recommended line sizes in Table 5-2 are equivalent length, which include the allowance for bends and valves.
The installers should confirm whether the sizes are appropriate for site conditions.

3. When the vertical difference between the indoor unit and outdoor unit is comparatively big, an oil trap is required for
every 7.5m of vertical lift. The over long piping line should be charged with enough compressor oil. Please consult
factory for details before installation.
5.1.2 Piping
Please refer to the Figure 5-2 and Figure 5-3 for piping while piping.
Notes
When the condenser is installed higher than the compressor, the back bend is fitted to the supply discharge line and the return
liquid line of the condenser to avoid the liquid return to the compressor. Make sure that the top end of the back bend is higher
than the topmost copper line of condenser.

5.1.3 Connection
The indoor unit and outdoor unit connect by jointing (as shown in Figure 5-4). The wet material must be wrapped on
the ball valve before jointing. Please note the notices and labels, which are affixed on the lower panel and side panel of
the AC unit near the ball valve while jointing.
Horizontal sections of discharge lines should be sloped downward from the compressor, with a slope of at least 1:2000
(5 mm down for each 1 m run). Discharge lines should be insulated where they are routed in the conditioned space
(including under a raised floor).
The liquid pressure drop should not exceed 40 kPa (5~6 psi), provided that there is no allowance of refrigeration. The
liquid line pressure drop is the sum of liquid flow resistance from the tubing and fitting (including the drier), plus the
loss of head pressure due to elevation above the condenser. If the liquid temperature is 38°C, the static pressure loss
is 11 kPa (1.6 psi) per meter of lift.
Considering the influence of the O.D. copper on the pressure drop of system, the O.D. copper of indoor unit and
outdoor unit must follow the recommended line sizes in Table 5-3.

5.2.1 General
The especial water line connection is required because the water cooled system should supply condenser water to
plate heat exchanger. The general arrangement diagram of water cooled unit is given in Figure 5-5.

The water pressure of lines is required to overcome the water pressure drop from all components of water cooled
system. Considering that the incrustation scale and impurity because of long-term operation may result in rise of the
water pressure, the delivery lift components (such as water pump) is required for 25%~30% space. Please refer to the
following principles for the connections of water lines.
1. A strainer (with 1 mm mesh) and isolation valves should be fitted to the condenser water supply for each unit. One of
these isolation valves may be a balancing valve. It is suggested that the pressure gauges is fitted to the water supply
and return lines of the plate heat exchanger. These allow the water flow rate to be adjusted to the requirement by the
factual pressure drop.
2. The water pump efficiency of plate heat exchanger system with the balancing valve is better. And it can control the
water discharge more accurately. And the water regulating valve can keep the optimum condenser temperature by
regulating the inner water flow.
3. It is preferable to be able to isolate individual refrigeration circuits, so that one can be kept in operation, while
service work is carried out on the other circuit.
5.2.2 Piping
Please refer to Figure 5-6 for piping. There are some piping places on the lower plate and side plate of AC unit. Please
consider the piping position by the site conditions while installation.

5.2.3 Connection
The in and out lines of Liebert.PEX indoor unit are male joints, as shown in Figure 5-7. The female joints can be
selected by the field condition, and the jointing also can be used. The nipple connection is recommended and the seal
of joints must be ensured.
Notes
Must ensure the seal of joints.
5.3.1 General
The indoor unit of Liebert.PEX series AC is classified into upfloor and downfloor in terms of the air flow mode. The
connection of air cooled system can choose duct or plenum (for room unit). It should be considered synthetically.
5.3.2 Piping
Note that: the interference between AC units should be reduced even avoided, when the AC units use the same air
plenum.

Users can connect the following controlling and alarm devices with the controller.
1. Water under floor. The sensor of water under floor is the normal accessory of AC unit, which is fitted to the
recommended place on the base of AC unit. One end is connected to 51# of terminal block, and the other is connected
to 24#, which is the common end of remote alarm. Any number of sensors can be linked in parallel, and there is one
alarm for water under floor indication per AC unit.
2. Remote shut down. The 37#, 38# of terminal block can be connected with the remote shut down switch. The 37#
and 38# had been shorted in factory. The short line is not needed when the remote shut down is required. When the
37# and 38# are disconnected, the AC unit is also turned off.
3. Monitoring system. The AC unit provides the special monitoring communication interface, which is connected with
the monitoring system.
4. Smoke detecting. The 91#, 92# and 93# of terminal block are used to connect with the smoke sensors. The 91# is a
common terminal. 92# is a normally open contactor. 93# is a normally closed contactor. Users can select a normally
open or normally closed contact by the logic of configured smoke sensor. The 80# and 81# are used to connect with
the alarm output of smoke sensor.
5. Control signal of outdoor unit. 70#, 71# and 70A#, 71A# are two teams of control signal access terminal of outdoor
unit. The switch status is the same as that of compressor.
6. Defined alarm terminals. The AC unit has four defined alarm terminals. The defined alarm 4 had been defined for
electrical heater alarm in factory. The other three terminals respond to the terminals of 50#, 51#, 55#, which can be
connected with four sensors. The 24# is the common end. These terminals can be defined as fire sensor and water
under floor. After connecting with alarm signals, the defined terminals should set the contact condition of
corresponding defined alarm by the microprocessor. For example, the alarm condition is set to be closed. If there is not
alarm, the contact cuts off and the input state of defined terminal is open. After alarm happens, the contactor is close
and the state of defined terminal is shorted. At this time, the LCD screen of indoor unit will display the alarm
information in conjunction with an audible alarm of the AC unit.
It is recommended: the remote alarm can be connected between 50# and 24#.
The access point of water under floor is defined in factory between 51# and 24#.
The protection switch of condensate pump (optional) is defined in factory between 55# and 24#.
7. Common alarm terminals. The 75# and 76# can be connected with the exterior common alarm. These two terminals
are controlled by the common alarm relay of the circuit board K3, and their output is used to connect with the devices
of exterior alarm (such as alarm indicator). When the critical alarm happens, the contactor cuts off. These terminals
can be used to generate the remote alarm, transmitting signal to the building manage system and dialing the calling
system. Users should provide the power of common alarm system circuit.
AC units operate according to the requirement distributed by the main controlling AC unit. The functions of standby
and cascade are allowed, but tour around is not allowed. This mode is applicable where the heating load is not even.
