Chapter 1 Preface 1

Chapter 1 Preface

This chapter mainly introduces the special requirement of machine room environment and the features of Liebert.PEX
series air conditioner (Liebert.PEX series AC for short).

1.1 Special Requirement Of Machine Room Environment

Precision environment control is critical to computer operation, which has strict requirements on the machine room
environment. The environment control that the general air conditioner (AC) cannot provide comprises the following
aspects:
Temperature control: The operation of computers and exchanges generates large amount of heat, whose density is
6~10 times larger than that in general offices. In order to optimize the equipment performance, the optimum
temperature of machine room is 22°C±1°C. So the AC unit must have sufficient cooling capacity and quick regulating
ability to prevent sharp change of temperature. Such requirements are beyond the ability of general AC.
Humidity control: Too high or too low humidity will damage the computer in computer room. Too high humidity will
condense the moisture in the computers and short or damage the computer hardware. When the humidity is too low,
the static accumulated in the machine room will make the computer unable to work or even crash. The general AC
cannot control the humidity within the required range.
Air flow / cleanness control: The operation of computers and exchanges generates large amount of heat. To
dissipate the heat, the AC should provide sufficient cooling air flow and long blowing distance. To be specific,
850~1020 m3/h air flow is required for each 3.5kW of cooling capacity. In addition, the strict requirement of air
cleanness requires that the AC should provide the air flow sufficient to circulate 30 times / hour, so as to filter the air.
Such requirements are also far beyond the ability of general AC.
Operation all year round: The general AC (cooling operation) is always used in summer, for 8h~10h each day. But
the machine room AC is required to work all the time throughout the year, and even in the winter when the outdoor
temperature is as low as -34°C.

1.2 Liebert.PEX Series AC

Liebert.PEX series AC is the professional AC of machine room. The models from 20kW ~ 100kW are available for big,
middle and small machine rooms. And precise temperature control, humidity control and reliability design can meet the
especial environment of machine room.
Precise temperature and humidity control: The temperature and humidity of Liebert.PEX series AC can set to ±1°C
and ±1%RH respectively. The intelligent micro-processing control technology can monitor the temperature change of
machine room in the past and take actions prior to the change, instead of passively responding to the environment
change.
Security and reliability: The machine room AC runs 24hrs a day, so the reliability is especially important. The
advanced micro-processing system of Liebert.PEX series AC can control the system automatically and minimize the
faults. The perfect functions of automatic alarm and diagnosis can protect the unit from malfunctions, and locate the
faults quickly, prolonging the system life span.
High performance: Liebert.PEX series AC uses Copeland scroll compressor with low vibration, low noise and high
reliability. Finned tube evaporator and the unique V-shaped distribution improve the efficiency of heat exchange. The
model-specific distributors can ensure the even distribution of refrigerant in each loop and improve the efficiency of
heat exchange. The elaborate system configuration can realize optimal system performance.
The comparisions between Liebert.PEX series AC and general AC are listed in Table 1-1.

It is an assembly, and its delivery lift is 58 kpa (about 6m water column pressure).
Analog leak alarm
The area model, dot model leak detector can supply units or a stand-alone monitoring system with the analog alarm
signal to trigger the alarm of AC units and cut the humidify system. The zoster leakage alarm can accurately show the
leakage location.
Smoke detector
The smoke detector can trigger the alarm system at once and turn off the unit when smoke is detected.
Fire detecor
The fire detector is used to monitor the field return air temperature. Once it detects high temperature, it cuts off the AC
unit at once. It is indispensable to some key machine rooms.
High efficient filter
The high efficient drainer is available to the environment where the higher air cleanliness class is required.
Electrode humidifier
The electrode humidifier consists of discharge valve, controlling system and steam distributor. It makes the water
become the conductor of current, and form a loop by electrifying three electrodes in the humidifying bucket. The
temperature of water arises to boil and then the humidifying steam is produced. The advanced automatic flushing

Chapter 5 Instruction Of Application

This chapter introduces the piping for refrigerant tubing system, water cooled units and air cooled units, as well as the
connection of controller.

5.1 Refrigerant Tubing System

5.1.1 General
The water cooled system requires no outdoor unit. The piping for the refrigerant is required for the indoor unit and
outdoor unit of the air cooled system. The general arrangement diagram of the refrigeration system is shown in Figure
5-1.

Figure 5-1 The general arrangement diagram of air cooled models

It is the installer’s responsibility to confirm that the equivalent length of refrigerant line is appropriate for site conditions
and decide the connection type. The equivalent length of lines should include the allowance for all kinds of bends.
Please refer to the principles as follows.
1. Consult the factory before installation whether measures like adding extended pipe assembly should be taken, if the
equivalent length of single line exceeds 30m, or the vertical difference between the indoor unit and outdoor unit
exceeds the values in Table 5-1.
Table 5-1 The verticla difference between indoor unit and outdoor unit
Indoor unit above Max. :+20m
Outdoor unit above Max. : -5m

PeX Series AC Technical Data Manual

Chapter 5 Instruction Of Application 35

2. The recommended line sizes in Table 5-2 are equivalent length, which include the allowance for bends and valves.
The installers should confirm whether the sizes are appropriate for site conditions.
Table 5-2 The equivalent length
The equivalent length (m)
Diameter of liquid line (inch)

3/4 0.3 0.18 0.76
7/8 0.44 0.24 1.1
1 1/8 0.56 0.3 1.4

3. When the vertical difference between the indoor unit and outdoor unit is comparatively big, an oil trap is required for
every 7.5m of vertical lift. The over long piping line should be charged with enough compressor oil. Please consult
factory for details before installation.

5.1.2 Piping
Please refer to the Figure 5-2 and Figure 5-3 for piping while piping.

Notes
When the condenser is installed higher than the compressor, the back bend is fitted to the supply discharge line and the return
liquid line of the condenser to avoid the liquid return to the compressor. Make sure that the top end of the back bend is higher
than the topmost copper line of condenser.

5.1.3 Connection
The indoor unit and outdoor unit connect by jointing (as shown in Figure 5-4). The wet material must be wrapped on
the ball valve before jointing. Please note the notices and labels, which are affixed on the lower panel and side panel of
the AC unit near the ball valve while jointing.
Horizontal sections of discharge lines should be sloped downward from the compressor, with a slope of at least 1:2000
(5 mm down for each 1 m run). Discharge lines should be insulated where they are routed in the conditioned space
(including under a raised floor).
The liquid pressure drop should not exceed 40 kPa (5~6 psi), provided that there is no allowance of refrigeration. The
liquid line pressure drop is the sum of liquid flow resistance from the tubing and fitting (including the drier), plus the
loss of head pressure due to elevation above the condenser. If the liquid temperature is 38°C, the static pressure loss
is 11 kPa (1.6 psi) per meter of lift.

Ball valve(liquid line)

Ball valve(discherge line)

Figure 5-4 Jointing position of unit lines

Considering the influence of the O.D. copper on the pressure drop of system, the O.D. copper of indoor unit and
outdoor unit must follow the recommended line sizes in Table 5-3.

The water pressure of lines is required to overcome the water pressure drop from all components of water cooled
system. Considering that the incrustation scale and impurity because of long-term operation may result in rise of the
water pressure, the delivery lift components (such as water pump) is required for 25%~30% space. Please refer to the
following principles for the connections of water lines.

1. A strainer (with 1 mm mesh) and isolation valves should be fitted to the condenser water supply for each unit. One of
these isolation valves may be a balancing valve. It is suggested that the pressure gauges is fitted to the water supply
and return lines of the plate heat exchanger. These allow the water flow rate to be adjusted to the requirement by the
factual pressure drop.
2. The water pump efficiency of plate heat exchanger system with the balancing valve is better. And it can control the
water discharge more accurately. And the water regulating valve can keep the optimum condenser temperature by
regulating the inner water flow.
3. It is preferable to be able to isolate individual refrigeration circuits, so that one can be kept in operation, while
service work is carried out on the other circuit.

5.2.2 Piping
Please refer to Figure 5-6 for piping. There are some piping places on the lower plate and side plate of AC unit. Please
consider the piping position by the site conditions while installation.

5.3 Air Cooled System

5.3.1 General
The indoor unit of Liebert.PEX series AC is classified into upfloor and downfloor in terms of the air flow mode. The
connection of air cooled system can choose duct or plenum (for room unit). It should be considered synthetically.

Discharge outlet Discharge inlet

Discharge inlet Discharge outlet

Figure 5-8 Discharge models

Please refer to the following principles for installing ducts.

1. The ratio between long side and short side of the rectangular duct shall not exceed 4:1.
2. The arc or slash rectangular bend can be adopted for angular pipe of the rectangular duct. The flow deflector is
required, if the side length is or greater than 500mm.
3. The reinforcing measurement is required, if the side length of the rectangular duct is or over 630 mm, the side length
of heat insulating duct is or over 800mm, and the length of duct is over 1200 mm.
4. The exterior of duct and its accessories should be smooth. Their arcs should be even, and the gap of joints should
be sealed. The joints and the regulating device of duct and its accessories cannot be fitted on the wall or in the ceiling.
5. The sealed test of duct must be in accordance with the norms of air leak check with lighting.

5.4.2 Connection Of Controller

The especial terminal block (as shown in Figure 5-10) provided by Liebert.PEX series AC unit provides some exterior
interfaces, including the remote controlling interface and alarm monitoring interface, to users. Its first half part is
connected with AC units, and the second half part is the controlling interface of users and controlling signal line
interface.

Users can connect the following controlling and alarm devices with the controller.

PeX Series AC Technical Data Manual

Chapter 5 Instruction Of Application 41

1. Water under floor. The sensor of water under floor is the normal accessory of AC unit, which is fitted to the
recommended place on the base of AC unit. One end is connected to 51# of terminal block, and the other is connected
to 24#, which is the common end of remote alarm. Any number of sensors can be linked in parallel, and there is one
alarm for water under floor indication per AC unit.
2. Remote shut down. The 37#, 38# of terminal block can be connected with the remote shut down switch. The 37#
and 38# had been shorted in factory. The short line is not needed when the remote shut down is required. When the
37# and 38# are disconnected, the AC unit is also turned off.
3. Monitoring system. The AC unit provides the special monitoring communication interface, which is connected with
the monitoring system.
4. Smoke detecting. The 91#, 92# and 93# of terminal block are used to connect with the smoke sensors. The 91# is a
common terminal. 92# is a normally open contactor. 93# is a normally closed contactor. Users can select a normally
open or normally closed contact by the logic of configured smoke sensor. The 80# and 81# are used to connect with
the alarm output of smoke sensor.
5. Control signal of outdoor unit. 70#, 71# and 70A#, 71A# are two teams of control signal access terminal of outdoor
unit. The switch status is the same as that of compressor.
6. Defined alarm terminals. The AC unit has four defined alarm terminals. The defined alarm 4 had been defined for
electrical heater alarm in factory. The other three terminals respond to the terminals of 50#, 51#, 55#, which can be
connected with four sensors. The 24# is the common end. These terminals can be defined as fire sensor and water
under floor. After connecting with alarm signals, the defined terminals should set the contact condition of
corresponding defined alarm by the microprocessor. For example, the alarm condition is set to be closed. If there is not
alarm, the contact cuts off and the input state of defined terminal is open. After alarm happens, the contactor is close
and the state of defined terminal is shorted. At this time, the LCD screen of indoor unit will display the alarm
information in conjunction with an audible alarm of the AC unit.
It is recommended: the remote alarm can be connected between 50# and 24#.
The access point of water under floor is defined in factory between 51# and 24#.
The protection switch of condensate pump (optional) is defined in factory between 55# and 24#.
7. Common alarm terminals. The 75# and 76# can be connected with the exterior common alarm. These two terminals
are controlled by the common alarm relay of the circuit board K3, and their output is used to connect with the devices
of exterior alarm (such as alarm indicator). When the critical alarm happens, the contactor cuts off. These terminals
can be used to generate the remote alarm, transmitting signal to the building manage system and dialing the calling
system. Users should provide the power of common alarm system circuit.

5.4.3 Multimachine And Group Control

AC Units can be controlled together to realize the function of group control and main unit tour round. Multi-machine
and group control can be realized through the CAN bus. The maximum connecting number is 16 (0~15) and the AC
unit 1 (whose address is 0) is defaulted as the main controlling unit. If the communication and net working of main
controlling AC unit is fail, other AC units operate solely. The main controlling AC unit sends the controlling commands
to each controlled AC unit timely (the time is 5 s). The controlled AC units send the measure data and unit state to
each AC unit.
The functions follow as:
1. No group control. All AC units operate solely. The function of standby and tour around is allowed but the cascade
function is not allowed.
2. The parameters of all AC units are shared. The main controlling AC unit calculates the requirement of total
refrigeration (heat, de-humidity and humidity) and distributes the requirement by the address. The controlled AC units
operate according to the requirement distributed by the main controlling AC unit. The functions of standby, tour around
and cascade are allowed. The requirement is distributed evenly.
3. The parameters of all AC units are shared. The main controlling AC unit checks the total requirement by the
condition of controlled AC units and estimates whether the refrigeration (heat, de-humidity and humidity) is needed.
Then the main controlling AC unit controls the operating mode of controlled AC units. The function of standby is
allowed but functions of tour around and cascade are not allowed.
4. The parameters of all AC units are shared. The main controlling AC unit calculates the requirement of total
refrigeration (heat, de-humidity and humidity) and distributes by the requirement of controlled AC units. The controlled

AC units operate according to the requirement distributed by the main controlling AC unit. The functions of standby
and cascade are allowed, but tour around is not allowed. This mode is applicable where the heating load is not even.
