LESSON 5- CHEER DANCING: NATURE AND BACKGROUND

I. Introduction

Dancing is part of human culture. It has many forms that are enjoyable and
makes the body stay fit and active. It is performed during celebrations or rituals.
At present, dancing is a form of recreation and a way to express oneself. Some
dances are executed solely for competitions in order to improve the
psychological well. being an individual. Cheerleading and other forms of dance
that increase physical confidence and help in the development of social skills. .

II. Learning Competencies

● engaging in MVPAs for at least sixty minutes in most days of the


week, in a variety of settings in and out of school (PEH11FH-la-t-8);
and
● discusses the nature of the different dances (PEH12FHla-19)

III. Learning Outcomes

Students will understand the following:


● set dance routines and engage in a dance exercise program,
● monitor one’s participation in dance activities; and
● constantly evaluate how well one has integrated dance into one’s personal
lifestyle

IV. Learning Content

“Cheerleading is an art and a sport that develops a person's


coordination,balance, and flexibility. It requires precise movements with
inclusion of gymnastics skills such as split, stunts, and jumps.”
Cheerleading continues to grow throughout the years because of its Popularity. People
of both sexes and of all ages participate in this sport. The athletic and competitive
approach trained cheerleaders to develop not only lifetime fitness but also, most
importantly, to teach life values.

Cheerleading and cheer dancing are two terms with similarities and differences.
Cheerleading requires precise movements because of the stunts used with the inclusion
of gymnastics skills. It is an art and a sport with a combination of dynamic movements
that incites the audience.

Cheer dancing, on the other hand, is the part where cheerleaders dance that has
chants, and provides popular music to make the presentation more exciting and fun.

Cheerleaders undergo a series of exercises for body strengthening and rexibily Thus,
safety measures are highly encouraged to prevent injuries and any form of damage.

Some of the Motions Used in Cheerleading

Split

Split is a position in which the legs form an angle of 180 degrees and ne Stretched and
extended in Opposite directions. It shows the flexibility of the hamstring muscles. A split
is commonly used to warm up the leg muscles preparing for a vigorous physical activity.
The following are the two forms of Split:

A. Front splits

One leg Is extended In front and the other leg it is at the rear of
the torso

B. Side split
Legs are extended to the left and right torso. A This is commonly
called straddle splits.

JUMP
To improve jumps, do these:

A. Do some stretching before and after the jumps

Make sure to execute jumps on a soft surface and wear appropriate shoes to avoid
knee injuries.

The following are examples of stretching exercises:

1. Sitting Straddle. Sit on the floor forming a ‘V' shape with the
legs. Lean forward and reach the legs without bending the knees.

2. Sitting Pike. Sit on the floor placing both legs in front.


Grab your feet and feel the stretch in your hamstring
muscles. Put your head on your knees for 10 seconds and
sit up again.

3. Butterfly Sit. Sit on the floor and close the legs


pointing outward with the soles together. Lean forward,
making your face near the feet. Do this for 10 seconds
and sit up again.

B. Identify the types of jumps


1. Toe-touch. Arms out straight to both sides and hands
are in fists, legs coming up into 3 full straddles, toes
pointed, and back straight.

2. Pike. Arms are straight forward and hands are in fists,


legs straight out, and knees are locked.

3. Herkie left. Arms are opposite of the positions of the


legs; the right leg is bent flat and the left leg straight in a
half straddle position.
Let’s Review:

● Cheerleading is an art that must be performed with grace and confidence. It is an


enjoyable recreation that develops strength and at the same time encourages
group camaraderie.
● Cheer dancing is when the cheerleaders dance. It has chants and music.
● There are various techniques and forms of splits and jumps. Moreover, certain
precautions in doing so must be considered to prevent injuries.

3. Create an exercise routine that can be applied to make the cheer dance safer

a cheerleader is prepared for a performance.

ACTIVITY 2: (Submit it to your output to CORE 153- PE Teacher)

1. Perform for at least 2 minutes video the motions used in cheerleading. Look for
music and costumes to be used in the performance. Your performance will be evaluated
according to the criteria
