Come, Follow Me. Discipleship in Scripture

In ancient Jewish tradition, a disciple
was like an apprentice.  To become the
disciple of a rabbi meant that the
student displayed a deep desire for
God and a drive to know him more.  To
invite a student into discipleship, the
rabbi would say, "Lek Hackeri" - "Come,
Follow Me."
Discipleship models the mission and
action of Jesus Christ in the Gospels.
 Jesus chose to reach the entire world
through pouring himself out in
relationship with his 12 apostles.  Even
more specifically, he formed the
deepest relationship with 3 of the 12:
 James, John, and Peter.

Teaching Teachers to Teach
Through the 12, Jesus walked with
them and formed them in their belief
in Him, but he also taught them how to
teach others.  In 2 Tim. 2:2 Paul says,
"And what you heard from me through
many witnesses entrust to faithful
people who will have the ability to
teach others as well."  This is true
Discipleship.
Discipleship at Pax Christi at a Glance
Consistency is Key
We ask our teens who are seeking
Discipleship to meet either weekly or
biweekly with an adult mentor (you).  growing in a relationship with Jesus
These meetings always occur in a
public location, such as a coffee shop.  our faith.  At the first Discipleship
Adult/Teen Relationship
Each adult mentor must be Virtus
trained and has a deep relationship
with Jesus they desire to share with
young people.
As an adult mentor, you are their
spiritual guide and not their best friend
or their counselor.  If a teen has other
needs that cannot be met through
mentorship, such as depression, please
let the youth minister know
immediately.
Meetings
Discipleship is about goal-setting and
accountability as well as formation and
through prayer and learning to share
meeting, the teen will complete a
Discipleship Roadmap that will set the
course for setting goals for their faith
life, such as prayer, reading Scripture,
service, etc. 
Most meetings will be formative,
utilizing a Bible study or other material
the student is interested in learning
about.  Occasionally the meetings will
be purely to hang out, share life with
one another, and enjoy each other's
company.  Always, they will include
praying together.
Why One-on-One?
Going Deeper
A one-on-one discipleship relationship
caters specifically to the needs of the
teen, allowing them a safe place to go
deeper into subjects and questions
they have about their faith.  All
materials and guidance in how to
mentor will be provided by Pax Christi
(see attached schedule).
Confidentiality & Accountability
Accountability in our Christian life is
huge, and it is best done in a one-on-
one relationship rather than in a small
group.   parents best prefer.  Some would like

confidential, with the exception of
anything that would be detrimental to
the health of the mentor or mentee.
Parent Involvement
Parents can choose their level of
involvement in communication with
the adult mentor as well as choose
how the mentor communicates with
their child.  For example, some parents
would like a brief outline of what the
teen and adult mentor did and
discussed at each Discipleship
 meeting.  Others may only want to
know when and where they are
meeting.
The adult mentor will communicate
with the teen in Discipleship in the way
to always be copied on an email or
text, while others do not mind an adult
mentor emailing or texting their teen
without including the parent on each
exchange.

STEPS
GETTING STARTED IN DISCIPLESHIP

1.  Meet with the youth minister 3.  Choose material

To start the process of Discipleship Mentor and mentee will decide
mentoring, set up a meeting on what the mentee would like to

questions about Discipleship, discuss study, prayer, knowledge of the faith,
who could be a good fit as a mentee,  etc).  The mentor and mentee will also

others through evangelization.
