Describing Motion
OBJECTIVES:
1. MELC: Describe the motion of an object in terms of distance or displacement, speed or velocity,
and acceleration
2. Content: Motion in One Dimension
3. Formation Standard: A responsible person observe rules and regulations at all times and applies
self-directed and Independent learning techniques (EXCELLENCE)

KEY CONCEPTS:
Motion is defined as the change in position
for a particular time interval
Reference point serves the original position of
an object which indicate that an object is in
motion or at rest
Distance refers to the length of the entire path
that the object travelled.
Displacement refers to the shortest distance
between the object’s two positions, like the
distance between its point of origin and its
point of destination, no matter what path it
took to get to that destination.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
I. Describe in words the position of the object.
SCIENCE 7 1
A. Consider the diagram in Figure 1. The positions of the objects are described in the diagram by
their coordinates along the number line.
Guide Questions
B. In this diagram, the positions of the ball rolling are shown at equal intervals of time. You can
use the diagram to describe the position of the ball at any given time.
SCIENCE 7 2
Guide Questions
1. What is the initial position of the ball? What is its final position?
C. Consider the diagram below in understanding distance and displacement. Broken line
represents Distance while straight line represents displacement.
SCIENCE 7 3
Guide questions:
1. What is/are the Dog’s Distance?
SYNTHESIS/REFLECTION:
What have you noticed about the distance and the displacement in the given
examplesabove?
