Seleucus Nicator sent an envoy named Megasthenes to Chandragupta's court. Traveling along Kabul
and Punjab, Megasthenes reached Patliputra, the capital of the Maurya Empire.
Obviously, he knew the part of the country through which he traveled and he relied on reports for his
knowledge of the rest of India. Although there are obvious limitations in his work because he was ignorant of
the language and customs of the country, he is nevertheless a reliable witness on the subjects that came under
his close observation.
His Indica is lost, but the fragments which still survive, written by Strabo, Arrian, Diodorus, and others,
throw light on Chandragupta's civil and military government, the soil of the country, the climate, the animals,
the flora, and the manners of the people.
