Quit India Movement

The 'Quit India Movement' call of the National Congress in 1942 took the movement for
political independence in North Bengal to a final stage of development. Massive mass frenzy spread
beyond administrative control throughout North Bengal. Jailing hundreds of local leaders of the
movement could not cause any shortfall in the movement. Then the soldiers were brought down with
the help of the police. Meanwhile, the destruction of government institutions continued. The police
station was burnt, the court was burnt, it was thrown over the railway line. Like the whole of India,
North Bengal had only one sound - 'Karenge Ya Marenge'.
Municipal commissioners resigned in Jalpaiguri in support of this movement. Students left
school and college and participated in the march. On August 8, perhaps the largest march in the history
of Jalpaiguri, led by Tarapada Banerjee and Uma Dasgupta, roamed the town and disrupted
government functions.
The main leader of this movement in Malda district was Pilla resident Sabadhkumar Mishra.
Under his leadership, mobs at various places uprooted railway lines, uprooted telegraph wires and
poles, set fire to post offices and railway stations. On August 4, 1942, the government arrested Mishra
and brought him to court; But the angry tide of a huge crowd snatched him away from the British jail.
In Dinajpur this movement took the form of a complete mass revolt. On the night of 13th
September, a large mass force of at least 8000 men secretly assembled at Danighat and under the
command of Saroj Chatterjee the next morning the town of Balurghat was completely razed to the
ground by open fire. Thousands of people were coded across the division. Meetings and processions
were banned everywhere. The price of Saroj Babu's head was announced as one thousand rupees.
Moreover, only 75000 rupees pitunikar was levied in Balurghat town itself.

১৯৪২ সালে জাতীয় কংলেলসর দেওয়া ‘ভারত ছাল া আলদােলের ডাক' উত্তরবলে রাজনেততক স্বাধীেতার আলদােেলক এক
চূ ান্ত তবকালের স্তলর তেলয় যায়. সমে উত্তরবে জুল প্রচন্ড গণ- উন্মােো প্রোসতেক তেয়ন্ত্রলণর বাইলর চলে যায়। আলদােলের স্থােীয়
দেতালের েলয় েলয় দজলে পুলরও আলদােলের দকােও ঘাটতত ঘটালত পৰ দগে ো। তখে পুতেলের সাহালযে সসেে োতময়া দেওয়া হলো।
তারই মলধে চেলো সরকারী প্রততষ্ঠালের ধ্বংসকাযয। থাো জ্বেলো, দকাটয পু লো, দরেোইলে উপলর দেো হলো। সারা ভারলতর মত
উত্তরবলের তখে একতটই ধ্বতে- ‘কলরলে ইয়া মলরলে।’
জেপাইগুত লত এই আলদােলের সমথযলে দপৌরকতমেোরগণ পেতোগ করলেে। ছালের স্কুে- কলেজ দছল তমতছলে অংে তেে। ৮ই
আগস্ট জেপাইগুত র ইততহালসর দবাধহয় সবযবৃহৎ তমতছে তারাপে বোোজযী ও উমা োসগুলের দেতৃলে েহরময় ঘুলর দব ায় এবং সরকারী
কাজকময স্তব্ধ কলর দে।
মােো দজোয় এই আলদােলের প্রধাে দেতৃলে তছলেে- তপল্লা তেবাসী সলবাধকুমার তমশ্র। তার দেতৃলে তবতভন্ন স্থালে জেতা দরে
োইে তুলে দেলে, দটতেোলমর তার ও খুুঁতট উপলর দেলে, দপাস্টঅতেস ও দরেলস্টেলে আগুে োলগ। ১৯৪২ সালের ৪ঠা অগাস্ট সরকার
তমশ্রলক বতদ কলর হাজলত তেলয় আলস; তকন্তু এক তবপুে জেতার তবক্ষুব্ধ দজায়ার তাুঁলক তিতটলের হাজত দথলক তছতেলয় তেলয় চলে যায়।
তেোজপুলর এই আলদােে সম্পূণয গণ-তবলরালহর রূপ দেয়। ১৩ই দসলেম্বর রালত কমপলক্ষ ৮০০০ দোলকর এক তবরাট গণ-বাতহেী
দগাপলে ডাতিঘালট সমলবত হয় এবং সলরাজ চোটাজযীর দেতৃলে পরতেে সকালে বােুরঘাট েহরলক অতেস অতি সংলযালগ সম্পূণয ভস্মীভূত হয়।
সারা মহকুমায় হাজার হাজার দোকলক দকালয়ড করা হলো। সবযে সভা ও তমতছে দবর করা তেতিদ্ধ হলয় দগলো। সলরাজবাবুর মাথার োম
একহাজার টাকা দঘািণা করা হলো। তাছা া বােুরঘাট েহলরই শুধু ৭৫০০০ টাকা তপটুতেকর ধাযযে করা হলো।
