Introduction
Reaction with respect to the formation of complexes can be used in volumetric
analysis of various types of metal cations. Titration where the main reaction occurs
to form a complex is called a complex titration. An example is the titration of zinc
and EDTA. EDTA is ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid.

This salt is a white solid and when it is dissolved in water, Na+ ions, anions and
water molecules will separate. If the ammonia solution is added, the COOH groups
in the anion will eliminate their H+ ions and ions (EDTA)4- will form complexes, for
example: it will react with zinc ions to form complexes [Zn (EDTA)]2- as below: Zn
2+ + (EDTA)4 - [Zn (EDTA) ]2 - .

Methodology 1. PREPARATION OF EDTA SOLUTION

Weigh accurately
approximately 0.95 g
disodium EDTA dihydrate salt.

Transfer to a 250 ml
volumetric flask.

Dissolve with distilled water

and dilute to graduation level.
Shake until homogeneous.
2. DILUTION AND STANDARDIZATION OF EDTA SOLUTION

Pipette 25 ml solution of calcium

carbonate (0.01M) into a 250 ml
Erlenmeyer flask.

Dilute to approximately 100 ml. Add 2

ml solution of magnesium complex, 5
ml of buffer solution and 1-2 drops of
indicator into this solution.

Titrate with EDTA until the dark red

color turns to blue.

Repeat the titration twice.

Repeat titration without adding 2mL

magnesium complex solution (Record
your observation)

3. DETERMINATION OF THE CONCENTRATION OF ZN+ SOLUTION

Pipette 25 ml of prepared Zn2+
solution into a 250 ml Erlenmeyer
flask

Dilute to approximately 100 ml.

Add 10 ml buffer solution and 1
drop indicator solution into this
solution.

Titrate with EDTA standard solution

until the color changes from dark
red to blue.

Titrate slowly and carefully when

approaching the end point.

Repeat the titration twice

Data 1. Fill in your data in the given table below:

2. Calculate the concentration of prepared EDTA and the concentration of

EDTA standardized with calcium carbonate in molar unit.

MEDTAVEDTA = MCaCO3VCaCO3
MEDTA(0.01313) = (0.01)(0.025)
MEDTA = 0.019 M

3. Calculate the concentration of zinc solution in the gdm -3 unit.

14.0+14.8+14.0
average of volume EDTA =

MZnVZn = MEDTAVEDTA
MZn(0.025) = (0.019)(0.0143)
MEDTA = 0.0109 M

concentration of Zn = 0.0109×65.38
= 0.7126 gdm -3

Data
Interpretation 1. What is the function of the buffer solution for titration with EDTA?
and Brief Resists the change in pH
Discussion
2. Why the concentration of obtained EDTA should be standardized with a
solution of calcium carbonate?
The CaCO3 solution will help to determine the end point

3. Give three examples of other indicators used in titration with EDTA.

-Eriochrome Black T
-Fast Sulphon Black
-Patton Reeder

4. Why magnesium complex solution should be added into a calcium

solution before titrated with EDTA? Explain your answer.
In order to see the change in colour from pink to blue, when all the
magnesium has disappeared from water. In addition, magnesium complex
is less stable than calcium complex. So all calcium ions are transformed into
stable complex with EDTA, liberating magnesium ion that associate to
indicator to show pink colour.

5. Propose 4 precautions to be taken when doing this experiment.

-Do not touch or taste any unknown substance.
-Use an only a small quantity of chemicals to carry out experiment.
-Do not work alone in the laboratory.
-Do not throw hot concentrated acids into the sink directly.

6. Describe three factors that cause results not meet the practical theory.
- slow rate
-decomposition of reactant
-evaporation

Conclusion

We able to do the dilution and standardization of EDTA solution. The concentration

of EDTA standard solution and the concentration of zinc has been calculated.
