PRESSURE RELIF VALAVE
pressure relief valves are found in almost every hydraulic circuit. It is normally
closed valve and it is connected between the pressure line (after pump) and the
oil reservoir.
• Main function of pressure relief valve :
Its main function is to limit the pressure in the system and thus to protect
the individual component and hydraulic oj carrying lines from overload and
danger of bursting. It is a safety valve. It takes care of safety of the hydraulic
system.

• Construction:
It consists of a valve body in which valve element (cone or ball) is fitted with
spring, The compression of spring can be adjusted by pressure setting
screw. There are two ports, P is pressure port connected to pump and R is
off return port connected to
'reservoir,

• Working :
The valve element is seated in valve body by the compressive force of
spring. When inlet pressure of oil is insufficient to overcome spring force,
valve will remain close.(No flow from port {p} to {R}. Hence normally this
valve closed when pressure of input oil through port (P) increases due to
some unpredicted blockages, then this increased pressure of oil will
overcome the spring force and will lift the valve element in upward
direction by compressing the spring. Due to lifting of valve element port P
will be uncovered and flow from port (P) to port (R) will start. Since port (R)
is connected to the oi reservoir, the oil will be discharged into it. This flow
will continue unless and until system pressure falls below the set valve.
Then again spring force will be dominating and value will close. The
pressure level in the system is thus controlled by spring force.

• Symbol of directly operated pressure relief valve :

ADVANTAGES :
• Simple design: Directly operated pressure relief valves have a simple
design that is easy to install, operate, and maintain. This can help reduce
costs and improve reliability.
• Fast response time: Directly operated pressure relief valves respond
quickly to changes in system pressure, providing rapid relief and
preventing damage to equipment and personnel.
• Cost-effective: Directly operated pressure relief valves are generally less
expensive than pilot-operated relief valves, making them a cost-effective
option for many applications.
• Easy to adjust: Directly operated relief valves are easy to adjust, allowing
operators to set the relief pressure to the desired level without the need
for specialized equipment or tools.
• Small size: Directly operated relief valves are typically smaller than pilot-
operated relief valves, making them suitable for applications where space
is limited..
DISADVANTAGES :
• Limited accuracy: Directly operated pressure relief valves may not provide
precise control of the pressure relief process. As a result, there may be a
risk of pressure spikes or overpressure, which could damage equipment
or create safety hazards.
• Low capacity: Directly operated pressure relief valves have limited
capacity compared to pilot-operated relief valves. This means that they
may not be suitable for applications that require high flow rates or large
volumes of fluid.
• Limited pressure range: Directly operated relief valves may have a limited
range of pressure settings, which may not be suitable for applications that
require a wider range of pressure relief.
• Limited reliability: Directly operated relief valves may be less reliable than
pilot-operated relief valves, as they may be prone to chatter and other
issues that can affect their performance and longevity.
• Limited flexibility: Directly operated relief valves may be less flexible than
pilot-operated relief valves, as they may not be able to accommodate
changes in system pressure or flow rate without manual adjustment.
APLLICATION:
• Compressed air systems: Directly operated pressure relief valves are often
used to protect compressed air systems from overpressure that can
damage equipment or create safety hazards.
• Hydraulic systems: Directly operated pressure relief valves are used in
hydraulic systems to protect components from overpressure that can
cause leaks or system failure.
• Gas and steam systems: Directly operated pressure relief valves are used
to protect gas and steam systems from overpressure that can damage
equipment or create safety hazards.
• Cooling systems: Directly operated pressure relief valves are used to
protect cooling systems from overpressure that can damage components
or cause leaks.
