MAJOR TYPES
OF ECOSYSTEM
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE
03 DIFFERENT ECOSYSTEMS

Provide essential Significant in regulating

products and benefits natural hazards

Mitigate climate Sustain crop and

change livestock production

Resilient to environmental
disturbances

Vital for ensuring high land

productivity in these times
of growing human population
FEATURES OF A
TROPICAL FOREST
ECOSYSTEM
HIGH
01 BIODIVERSITY

Tropical forests, which are home to

hundreds of endemic plant and animal
species, account for the majority of the
world's biodiversity.
02 WARM CLIMATE

The average annual temperature in

tropical forests is 77°F (25°C), which
is very stable throughout the year. The
warm weather encourages organic matter
to grow and decompose quickly, making
the forest floor especially fruitful.
03 RAINFALL

Rainfall in tropical woods is heavy; it

often amounts to approximately more than
100 inches (2500 mm) annually. Rain is
necessary to maintain the lush
vegetation of the forest and to support
a variety of animal life.
THE ROLE OF TROPICAL
FORESTS IN THE
ENVIRONMENT
01 WHY ARE TROPICAL
FORESTS
IMPORTANT?

Tropical forests are large sources of

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, due to
deforestation. They could instead be a
big part of the climate solution.
02 THE FORGOTTEN
APPROACH

One of the biggest dangers to life on

Earth is global warming. By removing CO2
from the atmosphere, tropical forests
could play a significant role in the
solution.
03 STORAGE FOR
NATURAL CARBON
DIOXIDE
The leaves of plants and trees breathe in
carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere
when the warm sunlight reaches them. As
the trees mature, they store carbon in
their trunks and roots while breathing out
oxygen (O2) and returning it to the
atmosphere. For millions of years, this
massive process of balance has been in
operation.
04 ESSENTIAL FOREST
FUNCTIONS

Some of the planet's most species-rich and

diverse habitats are tropical forests. The
creatures are essential to their own
ecosystems and priceless as sources of
food and medicine for people. For
instance, there are more ant species on a
single bush in the Amazon than there are
on the entire British Isles.
05 ENSURING THE
FUTURE

Without the massive rainforests like the

Amazon or the Central African forests,
severe droughts could occur more often. In
the worst situation, this might lead to
famine and an unprecedented migration from
the dried-out areas. As the threat of
climate change increases, trees shield us
from disastrous landslides and floods.
