    USED TO

    We use “used to” to talk about past habits and


    situations that have now changed.

    It tells us that something was different in the past.

    “Used to” is followed by an infinitive verb (used


    USED TO to+infinitive).

    The negative form of “used to” is “didn’t use


    to”.

    “Used to” has the same form for all persons.

    ► I used to study Chemistry. (I studied Chemistry, but now I study Law).

    ► We used to use Uber a lot. (Now we have our own car).

    ► She used to be very shy. (Now she’s a little more outgoing).

    ► We used to play soccer every Saturday. (We don’t play soccer anymore).

    ► He didn’t use to like Math. (Now he really likes it).

    ► You didn’t use to be rich. (Now you have a lot of money).

    ► It didn’t use to be so hot in here. (Now it’s really hot).

    ► Did you use to read a lot? Yes, I did / No, I didn’t / Yes, I used to / No, I didn’t use to.

    TIPS
    There’s no present form of “used to”. In this case, we use the Present Simple.

    TIPS
    We can use the Past Simple to talk about these situations/habits if we make it clear
    that we are talking about a particular period in the past.
    ► We used Uber a lot when we didn’t have a car.
    ► She was very shy when she was a teenager.
    ► You weren’t rich five years ago.

    We usually mix “used to” with the Past Simple when we talk about long-term past
    situations.
    ► In the 1950s, people used to read a lot more, not all of them had a T.V.
    ► Last year, I studied and worked, I didn’t use to sleep well.
