Subject Name: Electrical Machine 1
Subject Code: EE2001

Number of Pages: 2 Full Marks: 30 Duration: 2 Hours

• Answer all the Questions.

• Figure in the right margin indicates the full marks allotted to a question.

1. Consider the figure as shown in Figure 1 below. The bank comprises three single-phase transformers
having a turn ratio of 1:2. One resistive load is connected across the secondary delta terminals
that draw current I. While the 3-phase induction motor that is connected with the centre taping
of each secondary winding draws a current I2 , and its operating pf is 0.8. Find out the primary
side current. [4]

2. One ideal alternating current source of 10Amp is feeding a single-phase load through a parallel
combination of two transformers. The per unit impedance value of both the transformers are
equal, and also they have an equal X R ratio. However, the kVA rating of transformer-1 is thrice
of transformer-2. The load ’draws 10∠ − 36.86◦ when connected across a 200 Volt infinite busbar.
Find out the kVA transferred through individual transformers when their parallel combination is
utilized to transfer power from this 10Amp source to the above-mentioned load. [4]

3. An 11/3.3/0.4kV, Y/Y/∆, a three-winding transformer has a magnetizing current of 3.0 amperes.

At rated voltages, the secondary supplies a balanced load of 200 kVA at 0.8 pf lag and the tertiary
supplies a balanced load of 120 kW. The primary operates at a power factor of 0.8 pf lagging,
then find out the primary and tertiary phase currents and the power factor at which the tertiary
operates. [4]

4. A Scott-connected transformer is fed from a 6.6 kV 3 phase network and supplies two-phase
power at 500 volt per phase. Calculate the line current of the system if the loads on the two
phase sides are 500A at 0.8 pf lag for phase-1, and 400A at 0.9 pf lag for Phase-2. [4]

5. Find out the primary current, consider the 1:1 turns ratio. [4]

6. Find out whether the given statement is true or false and properly justify the following statements.
Without a cogent argument and appropriate justification, no answer will be considered. All parts
of this question 6 must be written in the same place.

(a) In the Yz11 connection, even if we keep both sides of the neutrals ungrounded, the third
harmonic magnetizing current can flow on the secondary side, yielding a sinusoidal phase
voltage during no-load operation. [2]

(b) In a Delta-zigzag connection, the transformer bank net kVA utilization is only 57.7% of the
amount of the installed kVA of the transformer. [2]

(c) In the case of the Dd0 transformer bank, where the primary is connected with the infinite
busbar, the magnetizing current in the individual transformer windings are non-sinusoidal
in nature. [2]

(d) When a two winding transformer is so connected to form a step-up auto-transformer, the
voltage per turn ratio increases for the new configuration. [2]

(e) If we connect a two winding transformer as an auto-transformer, the active power loss will
be minimized in this new configuration. [2]
