b) NaOH (40 g/mol) - %Na = 57.5% - %O = 40% - %H = 2.5%

3. a) Determine the number of molecules in 24 g of FeF 3?

55.8+57 = 116 g/mol 24g/116 g/mol =0.207 mol

0.207*Avogadro number

0.207*6.022*10^23 = 1.2*10^23 molecules

b) Find the mass in grams of 2.3 x 1024 silver atoms.

(2.3*10^24/6.022*10^23)*108g/mol
=412.49g

c) Find the mass in grams of 7.5 x 1023 molecules of H2SO4.

(7.5*10^23/6.022*10^23)*98g/mol
=122.05g

4. Determine the number of moles of calcium (Ca) atoms in 77.4 g of Calcium.

77.4g/40g/mol =1.935g

5. Find the mass in grams of 1.00 x 1012 lead (Pb) atoms.

(1.00*10^12/6.022*10^23)/207g/mol
=

6. Nicotine is 74.1% carbon, 8.6% hydrogen and 17.3% nitrogen by mass. Its molar
mass is 160 g/mol. Determine the molecular formula of nicotine.
7. Determine the molecular formula of C2H3O (molar mass = 172 g/mol).

43g/mol

172/43=4

C8H12O4
8. Balance the equations below:
a) N2 + H2 NH3
b) NaCl + F2 NaF + Cl2
c) H2 + O2 H 2O
d) S8 + O2 SO3
e) H2SO4 + NaNO2 HNO2 + Na2SO4

9. Pheromones are a special type of compound secreted by the female of many

insect species to attract the males for mating. One pheromone has the molecular
formula C19H38O. Normally, the amount of this pheromone secreted by a female
insect is about 1.0 X 10-12 g. How many molecules are there in this quantity?

10. Using the following equation:

2NaOH + H2SO4 2H2O + Na2SO4
How many grams of sodium sulfate will be formed if you start with 200.0 g of
sodium hydroxide and you have an excess of sulphuric acid?

11. Certain race cars use menthanol (CH3OH , also called wood alcohol) as a fuel.
The combustion of methanol occurs according to the following equation:
2CH3OH (l) + 3O2 (g) → 2CO2 (g) + 4H2O (l)
In a particular reaction, 9.8 moles of CH3OH are reacted with an excess of O2.
Find the number of moles of H2O formed.
12. When baking soda (NaHCO3) is heated, it releases carbon dioxide gas, which is
responsible for the rising of cookies, donuts and bread.
a) Write a balanced equation for the decomposition of the compound (one of the
products is Na2CO3).
b) Determine the mass of NaHCO3 required to produce 20.5 g of CO2.

13. Fermentation is a complex chemical process of wine making in which glucose is

converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide:
C6H12O6 → 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
Starting with 500.4 g of glucose, find the maximum amount of ethanol in
grams and in liters that can be obtained by this process. (Density of ethanol is
0.789 g/mL).
