Constitution
Elections were held in February 1997 and Pakistan Muslim League got
137 and PPP got 18 seats,so Nawaz Sharif resumed power as the Prime
Minister.
Some amendments were made to the constitution under Nawaz Sharif

He took away power from the president to dissolve the assembly


without being advised by the PM
Anti Defection Bill: He made it unlawful for members of the assembly
to change parties
He gave all authority for enforcing religious laws to the PM (Shariat
Bill)
Through these amendments, Nawaz Sharif made the office of the
Prime Minister more powerful and secure.

SAJJAD ALI SHAH WAS APPOINTED AS CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT DURING
THE RULE OF BENAZIR BHUTTO
HE SOON BECAME A CRITIC OF NAWAZ SHARIF, TO THE POINT THAT NAWAZ SHARIF FOUND
HIMSELF DEFENDING AGAINST THE ACCUSATIONS OF CORRUPTION IN 1997
AN UNRULY MOB STORMED INTO THE SUPREME COURT AND DEMANDED CHIEF JUSTICE
SAJJAD ALI SHAH TO BREAK OFF THE CASE AGAINST NAWAZ SHARIF, WHILE HUNDREDS OF
SHARIF SUPPORTERS BROKE INTO THE COURTHOUSE REBELLING, CAUSING THE CHIEF
JUSTICE TO FLEE FOR HIS SAFETY
HOWEVER PEACE WAS ONLY RESTORED AFTER THE POLICE HAD TO BATON CHARGE AND
TEAR GAS THE MOB INSIDE AND OUTISIDE THE COURTHOUSE
NAWAZ SHARIF HAD ALSO GOTTEN SUPPORT FROM PRESIDENT LAGARI
THE EIGHTH AMMENDMENT HAD BEEN REVOKED SO SHARIF COULD NOT DISMISS THE
POWERFUL MEASURES BEING TAKEN BY THE GOVERNMENT
IT CAME TO HIM AS A SHOCK WHEN HE WAS ASKED TO DISMISS SAJJAD ALI SHAH AND
APPOINT A NEW ACTING CHEIF OF JUSTICE OF PAKISTAN
AS A RESULT, NAWAZ SHARIF RESIGNED ON 2 DECEMBER 1997, AFTER WHICH PML
CANDIDATE MUHAMMAD RAFIQ TARAR WAS ELECTED TO REPLACE SHARIF
SAJJAD ALI SHAH WAS DISMISSED ON 23 DECEMBER WHEN AJMAL MIAN WAS APPOINTED
AS THE PERMANANT CHEIF JUSTICE OF PAKISTAN
In 1998, nuclear tests were carried out in

especially from USA and Japan who were
compelled to economically sanction
