Why Are Concerts Ticket So Expensive?

Concerts is something that everyone loves as who does not want to see their favorite

artist preforming. But we always have the same concerns about ticket being super expensive.

Why do concert ticket shot over $500? That should be a price reserved for a music festival like

Coachella. It is the worst when you go to buy a ticket to go see an artist that you love but the

tickets are starting at over $250 a piece. This is something that is not right and confuses me as to

why we are allowing this to happen.

Ticket disturbers like Ticketmaster use this a method of pricing their tickets which is

called “Dynamic Pricing.” What this does is changes the pricing of tickets depending on

consumer demand. If a person is willing to pay $300 for a ticket what happens is that the tickets

increase more because clearly people are buying these tickets at these really high prices. This has

always been an issue with tickets, but I feel as if recently it became more of a topic of discussion

because of what happened with Taylor Swifts Era’s tour tickets. Back in November Taylor Swift

set an all-time high record with the demand for her tour tickets. In an article by Lauren

Magarino, she states, “Taylor Swift set a new record in November with over two million tickets

sold for her "Eras" tour in just 24 hours.” She had over 10 million people in the waiting to buy
tickets and Ticketmaster was not able to keep up with the demand and allowed bots to get in and

left many fans upset as they sat and waited over three hours and could not get tickets at the end.

In that same article it is said that now legal action will be taken on Ticketmaster (Magarino).

Ticketmaster has had many issues in the past with tickets and pricing, so it is not shooking that

an issue like this happened. They even ensure to Taylor and her team that they would be able to

keep up with the high demand, but clearly they were not able to as many fans were very unhappy

with the outcome.

With that said it also raises the question on whether Ticketmaster should have such power

and control when it comes to selling tickets. Lately the fun has been taken out of buying tickets

as many people buy them to resell tickets at super high prices or bots also come in grabbing tons

of tickets and having them sold at crazy prices. It is unfair and Ticketmaster should do something

about it like putting a limit to the resell or not allowing resales to happen. We are just going to

see these prices go up every time an artist tours and on top of that festival prices are also going

up. Coachella tickets go up every single year and this year it has reached $499 before tax. And

that is just for the tickets. Back in 2010 tickets were $269 and even further back in 2004 they
were $140. It is so interesting to see this as many of these festivals and concert do not change or

add anything extra to the experience to give a valid reason on why their tickets are increasing. It

makes it harder for us as consumers to go and enjoy these experiences as it becomes very

overpriced and must give an arm and leg just to go.

Overall, we as fans and consumer we need to put pressure on the industry and the artist to

ensure that prices go down instead of up. We must go on a strike or something like let them

know that is not fair nor right that we have to pay these high prices. Buying tickets should be less

stressful and should be something that we can acquire without having to worry about whether the

ticket will wipe our back accounts clean. We should worry on how fun the event will be and who

we are going with and what we will wear. The fun of going to an event needs to comeback and

dynamic pricing and prices increase should stop as these events already make enough money as

it is through not only tickets but merch, food, photos, etc. Hopefully we see these changes soon

and we see more fans and maybe even artist speak up about these crazy prices. We need to bring

back the ease and joy of buying tickets and attending events again.
