The riqa’a font is an easy Arabic font popularly used with speed writing. Its’
letters combines strength and beauty, and it is one of the usual fonts that is
widely used in most most Arab countries.

‫ تكتب جميع حروف الرقعة فوق‬.‫جميع حروفه مطموسة عدا الفاء والقاف الوسطية‬
‫السطر ما عدا الھاء الوسطية والجيم والحاء والخاء والعين والغين المنفصالت وميم‬
.‫آخر الكلمة أو الميم المنفصلة‬
All its’ letters are effaced except for ‘fa’ and ‘qaf’ when they come in between
other letters. All riqaa font letters are written on top of the line except for the
haa, when it comes between letters, and jeem, hhaa, khaa, ayn and ghayn, when
they are separated, and the meem at the end of a word, and the separated
meem.

The modern riqaa font was founded through the Naskh and Thulth fonts. It is
believed that the first person who developed and used it was the Turkish

calligrapher Mohamed Ezzat Afandy. The font developed largely in the time of
Sultan Suleiman Alqanooni and Abdelhameed Alawwal 1200H. Turkish
calligrapher Abu Bakr Mumtaz Ben Mustafa Afandy (Mumtaz Bek) had set up
the rules and geometries for the font in the time of Sultan AbdelMajeed
1280H/1863AC.

The font has spread in Egypt and was first used by king Farooq’s writer, Najeeb
Bek. In general, the Arabic scripts that are used colloquially these days are mostly
a combination of the nashkh and riqaa fonts.
