“THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN EDUCATION

IN THE NEW NORMAL”

As we faced this Covid-19 Global Pandemic, we were all forced to stay at home and be isolated
for years now. Kids can’t go to school and workers can’t go to their work places that has an outcome of
kids can’t study and losing interest in studying because of what happening in current existence. In the 20 th
century we are living now, a great stage of modernization of technologies came, many things were made
to make everybody’s life easier and less hassle and one of them is the thing we called the social media.
What is really the role of social media in our education system in the new normal? Does it really help us?

Communication. The social media is the new way of communicating with each other which is
the number one demand to continue studying, a great communication between the students and their
teachers. A teacher would never know if their students are learning if they won’t talk to them and ask
them and students won’t learn if they don’t clarify those things that they were struggling with, that is the
communication I am talking about. Just think about that, we are not in face to face, we don’t see each
other and we can’t, so how we are going to talk with each other in a way that we used to in pre-pandemic?
Social media is the key as they say, sending virtual messages with each other, discussing the lessons
through the use of Zoom and that way we are continue learning.

Learning. The social media has become the modern library, just one click on the google you
would know what you are finding. In pre-pandemic we used to go in library to find sources of our
researches and studies but since we can’t right now, the social media particularly the Wikipedia has
served us as our library which helps us the most. Citing one of the forms of learning, as we continually
citing things over things our knowledge will grow and being careful of what you cite is must. Many
websites bring us the information we need.

Socializing. Socializing has got one of the biggest roles on Education, we usually socialize
face to face before, having group activities where students can get along with each other and build a good
connection with one another and helping each other in time of struggles for example on this particular
subject. In this time of isolation, how can we maintain socializing and keep in touch with one another?
Social Media again, the Messenger is one of the most popular chatting applications. Keeping in touch
with one another is essential, reaching out your love ones is must not just in terms of education but
checking their mental and physical health. We may be in isolated for times but the education must go on,
as my own personal experience I have performed socializing and I have made friends. I remember the
time I was so scared thinking about how would I going to make friends as I used before knowing that I
wouldn’t see my classmates everyday but just in one group reporting that Ma’am Celia has assigned us, I
have just made friends which is really helpful cause someone can help me and I can help them too.
Socializing and communicating are pretty similar, both we need in our education system
Virtual School. In today’s situation social media particularly, the Facebook has become our
virtual school. Having our Flag ceremony every morning in Monday’s, our celebration of The Month of
the Holy Rosary during the days of October, our novena every Wednesday’s and our mass at the first
Friday of the month is being continually performed through the use of social media. School life that we
miss so much was almost perfect as the face to face classes, we had our intramurals which we used social
media too. We had so much fun in our isolated times through the use of social media.

In general, we can see the overall role of social media in our education specially in times we are
right now, it really helps us a lot. Just think about how our education’s going to be in this time of
pandemic without all of these. Yes, it has negative impacts in our life which is completely normal to a
thing, having advantage and disadvantage which makes the world balance. As we use this amazing
platform for learning, communicating, socializing and school matters being careful and critical is must.
