Wan Djawad is the Technical Director at Durham Lifting with extensive background working in
various leadership roles within the Lifting Equipment industry. Since 2019, he has accelerated
his involvement within the UK offshore renewable energy sector through senior engineering
roles involving leading the design and build for the offshore renewable sector including
obtaining DNV class approval for offshore structures and DNV type approvals for lifting
equipment product range.
At Durham Lifting, he is the authority in the technical aspects of the business including design
of standard and bespoke lifting equipment, code conformance, third party certifications and
other areas requiring technical input. His work within the company has seen a stronger
technical team being developed, various successful completion of multi-discipline projects,
maintaining efficient communication with project stakeholders, providing technical assurance,
managing expectations, and delivering bespoke solutions to clients’ challenges.
We strongly believe Wan Djawad and his achievements at such a young age is the definition
of an Aspiring Leader, already being recognised both internationally and locally. His addition
to the Teesside area uplifts the engineering excellence of our region and is surely an
advantage to the industry that can only see an upward trajectory with more engineers like
him.

Wan Djawad is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers. Having been active with the IMechE both in the UK and Malaysia, Wan has held
various leadership roles withing the IMechE. Since the 2019/2020 up until the recent
2021/2022 term, he was the the Chair for the Teesside IMechE Young Members Section
(YMS) working with aspiring young engineers in the Teesside area to promote and develop
the engineering community in the area. Throughout his career, Wan has been passionate in
training, and leading young engineers keen to develop their careers in engineering. In 2012,
he founded a non-profit working on improving graduate employability in Malaysia by providing
training and mentorship to young people to be successful in gaining employment within their
fields of choice. He worked with various professionals from the Engineering, Medicine, Legal
and other fields to inspire young people in achieving their goals. Through his work with the
non-profit, in 2013, Wan Djawad was awarded the Chevening Scholarship by then, the UK
Foreign and Commonwealth Office, funded by BAE Systems to complete an MSc in Steel

on their leadership and
academic excellence within their fields of expertise. Delegates would go on to become high
level professionals in various industries, nation builders including world leaders. Wan would
carry on being elected the President of the Chevening Alumni in Malaysia, which is the
largest Chevening Alumni organisation internationally. His experience with the non-profit and
as an alumnus of the Chevening Scholarship has seen him travel all across Asia and Europe
to deliver talks at various seminars and forums, mainly to young professionals keen on nation
building. His role as a local STEM ambassador also sees him working with school children
and young people in the Darlington and Middlesbrough area. Wan started his career in the
lifting equipment sector in 2008 working with global lifting names such as Demag. In
Malaysia, his expertise with Lifting and Material Handling Equipment sees him often providing
technical consultation to the Department of Occupational Health and Safety, often in regard to
designs of bespoke lifting equipment. Since 2019, he has become involved in the UK offshore
sector, designing, and managing projects involving offshore structures and lifting equipment.
These include taking the lead in designing to and obtaining class and type approval from
accredited registrars such as DNV GL and Lloyd’s Register. As Technical Director at Durham
Lifting, Wan has grown and developed the engineering capabilities of the company to expand
on its products and service offerings. Navigating the ever-changing industry, Wan has worked
to future-proof the business through capacity building ensuring Durham Lifting as a business
will be able to meet the growing demands of the offshore renewable energy sector. This
includes improving the company’s lifting beam offering to 2500 tonnes capacity, increasing
testing capacity up to 3000 tonnes, working on patented designs for subsea operations and
developing offshore crane systems in particular for wind turbine maintenance and personnel
emergency evacuation. Wan lives in a village outside Darlington with his wife, twin girls, two
dogs and two cats, all rescue animals brought over from Malaysia. A keen rock climber, he
enjoys bouldering with the local climbing community, travelling, and climbing across the UK in
his spare time.
