LEGIONELLA
(LEGIONNAIRE DISEASE &
PONTIAC FEVER)
Legionnaires disease, a type of severe pneumonia, is
caused by breathing in small droplets of water that
contain legionella.

In 1976 a group of people went to a Philadelpia

convention of American Legion suffered from a
type of unknown Pneumonia later known as the

Legionnaires' Disease.
Pontiac fever is milder than Legionnaires' disease and
presents as an influenza like illness, with fever, headache
and but no signs of pneumonia. Pontiac fever can affect
healthy people. as well as those with underlying illnesses,
and symptoms occur within 72 hours of exposure. Most
patients fully recover. Up to 95% of people exposed in
outbreak setting can develop symptoms of Pontiac fever.
ATYPICAL PNEUMONIA
(WALKING PNEUMONIA)

A particular bacterium frequently causes walking

pneumonia, which has milder symptoms that appear more
gradually than those of other types of pneumonia. Young
children who get sick at school frequently bring it home.
Symptoms usually start to appear in family members of
infected children two to three weeks later. An antibiotic
can be used to treat this sort of pneumonia.
HANSEN'S DISEASE

(LEPROSY)
Is an infection caused by slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium
leprae. It can affect the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose
(nasal mucosa). With early diagnosis and treatment, the disease can
be cured. Hansen's disease patients are still able to work and maintain
an active lifestyle both during and after therapy. Leprosy was long
thought to be a dangerous and extremely contagious illness, but today
we know it is not communicable and that treatment is quite successful.
However, if the nerve damage is not treated, it can lead to blindness,
paralysis, and the paralysis of the hands and feet.
EMETIC & DIARRHOEAL

SYNDROME

The emetic (vomiting) syndrome and the diarrhoeal syndrome are

two gastrointestinal illnesses that can be brought on by the
foodborne bacterium Bacillus cereus. When food is infected with
the emetic toxin (cereulide), vomiting happens after
consumption is an intoxication that is caused by ingestion of a
cyclic peptide toxin called cereulide that is pre-formed in the
food during growth by B. cereus. This syndrome has a short
incubation period and recovery time.
ANTHRAX

A serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped

bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis. It occurs naturally in soil and
commonly affects domestic and wild animals around the world. People
can get sick with anthrax if they come in contact with infected animals
or contaminated animal products. [Pulmonary anthrax (Wool Sorter's
disease)] [Cutaneous anthrax]. Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria
known as bacillus anthracis. It occurs naturally in soil and commonly
affects domestic and wild animals around the world. People can get
sick with anthrax if they come in contact with infected animals or
contaminated animal products.
