UNIT-I
1 a. Define polarization in dielectrics and deduce the expression of dielectric constant. (10marks)
b. Point charges of 1mC and -2mC are located at (3,2,-1) and (-1,-1,4) respectively.
Calculate the electric force (F) on a 10nC charge located at (0,3,1) and electric (10marks)
field intensity (E) at that point.
2 a. Define Gauss’s law and demonstrate it with an example. (10marks)
b. Consider a parallel plate capacitor where the plates are infinite in extent and are
separated by a distance x1. The left plate is at zero potential and the right plate is
(10marks)
at potential V1. Find the potential distribution between plates using suitable
boundary value problem.
3 a. Derive Poisson’s and Laplace’s equation from electrostatic field relations.
Discuss the general procedure for solving the Poisson’s and Laplace’s equations. (10marks)
b. If the flux density D=(2y2 +z) ax +4xy ay +x az C/m2 , find (i) The volume charge
density (ii) The flux through the cube defined by 0≼x≼1, 0≼y≼1 and 0≼z≼1 (10marks)
(iii) The total charge enclosed by the cube.
UNIT-II
4 a. Define Biot-Savart’s law and derive magnetic field intensity for a current carrying
conductor. (10marks)
b. Consider an infinitely long co-axial cable used as a transmission line. It consists
of two concentric cylindrical conducotrs with inner radius ‘a’ and outer radius ‘b’.
The axis of the cable lies along z-axis. Determine magnetic field H everywhere (10marks)
assuming that current is uniformly distributed in both the condutors.
