Type of Product
30 minute programme breakfast show. The style of presentation for the show is informal and
chatty. It would replicate an early morning chat between friends whilst also giving out useful
and relevant information to the target audience. This is so it can be more relatable to the
audience while at the same time giving out good information about the college and what is
going on inside the college and to support students thinking about their futures.

Name of radio show

Funky Fridays - the use of alliteration in the radio show name “Funky Fridays” makes it a
catchy and fun name which reflects the tone of the show as it is an informal and upbeat
breakfast show. The day “Friday” refers to it being a radio show broadcast on a Friday.

Intended Radio Station

Radio Wave - Priestley College’s radio station, Radio Wave has been a radio station at the
college since 2010 and broadcasts to the Viola Beach cafe in the Priestley building and the
Crescent Cafe in the Crescent building. Its aim is to keep students and staff inside the
college up to date about everything happening around the college and to give students the
chance to demonstrate their talents, for example new and upcoming bands in the college
and to develop their skills. Students that are interested in courses such as Music Production,
Media Studies and Journalism have the chance to help out on the college radio and develop
their skills which will support their applications for University, apprenticeships or jobs after
Priestley.

Target Audience
The target audience for this radio breakfast show is 16-19 year old students in Priestley
College and staff who are listening to the radio show that talks about everything going
around Priestley College. These students live in a wide area of places, such as Warrington,
Newton Le Willows, Runcorn and Liverpool. These students socialise in the Viola Beach as
they like to listen to music, get drinks from Costa, get food from the canteen on the first floor
of Viola Beach and possibly study for whatever courses they are doing in college. The radio
show will talk about a variation of different topics and play a range of different music to
intrigue the audience to listen in. These topics include therapy animals and how they can
help students with severe mental health problems, the history of the Viola Beach band, what
to do after college and how to apply to university.

Content (including reasons for your choices)

● therapy animals and mental health - This includes using animals such as cats or
dogs to help calm people with severe mental health who attend college and are
possibly not comfortable discussing their mental health. We will be discussing the
pros and cons of having a therapy dog in college for example, weighing the negative
impact on those with allergies to dog fur or with phobias against the positive impact
on those who feel they would benefit from the calming influence of a dog.
● interview with Sandra or Caroline - With Sandra, this would focus on the function
of The Base and the role of Learning support in Priestley. With Caroline it would
focus on the provision the Wellbeing team offers the students and staff in college.
● the history of viola beach - The band Viola Beach was formed in Warrington in
2013 by Kris Leonard, Frankie Coulson, Jonny Gibson and Jack Dakin where they
sang at locations such as Priestley College and all around Warrington. In February
2016, all members of the band died after their car fell off a bridge in Sweden. We
would discuss why the Wicked Cafe was renamed after them.
● what to do after college - Some of the best things to do on free periods or after
college is go into town, for example the Golden Square or the Warrington Market, or
even the Cineworld where you can go watch films that have just come out. Other
places include Stockton Heath where if you are 18 or over you could possibly go into
one of the bars after college and have a drink with friends. We will also look at
travelling a bit further afield and discuss venues for upcoming bands in Manchester
and LIverpool or interesting things to do, for example the Beyond Ski Centre or the
SlingShot near to the Trafford Centre.
● how to apply to university - We will discuss Ucas applications and getting the best
references from our tutors. We will also discuss whether students should choose a
University for the socialising and nightlife or for the academic courses. We will also
look at going abroad to University and discuss scholarship schemes to Universities in
The USA.
● Mental Health and music. Music is a great way to escape the reality of things going
on in the world and can increase your mental health. Singing out loud can boost your
endorphins, as can having a dance.

DJ/Presenters
Nicole - My favourite band is the Foo Fighters and I tend to listen to rock music, however I
listen to a wide range of genres such as Indie music. My favourite foo fighters song is “Times
Like These”, because it has a deeper meaning to myself personally and a fast beat. I like to
listen to a range of music bands and I read quite a lot. Personally, once I get stuck into a
book, I dive into the world of the written book I am reading. I like binge watching a range of
different tv shows as it distracts me from all the chaos elsewhere surrounding me.
Oliver - My favourite bands to listen to are Queen, Foo Fighters and Nirvana, as I like to
listen to rock music because it usually has a fast tempo but I also like the slower songs too.
My favourite Nirvana song is “Jesus don’t want me for a sunbeam” from the unplugged
album. I like this raw and emotional rendition. I enjoy a good debate and like expressing my
opinions, especially about current issues like strikes. My other hobbies include watching
films at the cinema, supporting LFC and spending time Facetiming my brother in Tokyo and
my sister in Dubai.
Ashley - I like all genres of music and artists like Lewis Capaldi and Maneskin. My favourite
song is Loneliest by Maneskin. I like to have good conversations with people on popular
opinions and recents topics in the media. When alone I use my time to play online video
games on the xbox and during summer time I play cricket in the 3rd team in a local league
for my local cricket club and spend 90 percent of my free time there during the summer.
