A total of 124 new suspected AWD/cholera cases (58 female and 66 male) and no
death was reported during week 07.
Out of 92 (74.2%) were children under five years of age.
The 124 new suspected AWD/cholera cases were reported from 15 districts of South
West states and Banadir region.
In week 07, the overall attack rate of 23 cases per 100,000 persons were reported from
22 districts and the most affected districts include Deyniile, Baidoa and Afgoye.

Cumulative statistics

Since EPI week 1 to 07, Feb 2022, 844 cholera cases including 1 deaths with (CFR 0.1%),
were reported from 22 districts of South West and Banadir region.
Since the beginning of the year of which 623 (73.8%) were children under 5 years of
age and 419 (49.6%) cases were females.
Since January 2022, a total of 144 stool samples collected out of which 18 tested posi-
tive for Vibrio Cholerae Ogawa.
There are currently 3 CTC, 2 in Southwest and 1 Benadir region

mission cycle since 2017 (fig 2). Benadir region has the highest concentration of internally dis-
placed person whose access to safe water and sanitation is limited. Since week 1 to week 7 of
2022, a total of 844 cases and one death have been reported in 22 districts the most affected dis-
tricts include Daynile (177) and Afgoye (126).

 In Baidoa (138), the cholera outbreak started in January 2020 after the last outbreak was reported
in 2017. The reduction in cases in Baidoa is attributed to Oral Choler Vaccination Campaign that
was implemented in Baidoa in 2017 (fig 3). Since epidemiological week 1 to week 7 of 2022, 138
number of cholera cases and No deaths have been reported in Baidoa. Other districts reporting
cases are summarized in table 2. All new cases of cholera did not receive oral cholera vaccine.
Gaps in response

 Deployment of additional rapid response teams and community health volunteers to investigate
and verify cholera alerts reported in IDPs
 Hygienic kits for distribution to displaced communities
 Refresher training of frontline health workers on clinical management of cholera cases
 Scale up of Community awareness and sensitization campaigns in drought affected districts
 Activation of Early Warning Alert and Response Network in drought affected districts to support
timely detection and response to alerts
 Need for re-active oral cholera vaccination campaign in selected districts

Standard case definitions used for cholera surveillance in Somalia


Acute watery diarrhea (AWD)
 Acute watery diarrhea is an illness characterized by 3 or more loose or watery (non-bloody)
stools within a 24-hour period.
Suspected cholera case
 In districts where a cholera outbreak has not been declared: Any patient aged 2 years and older
presenting with acute watery diarrhea and severe dehydration or dying from acute watery diar-
rhea.
Confirmed cholera case
 A suspected case with Vibrio cholerae O1 or O139 confirmed by culture or PCR and in countries
where cholera is not present or has been eliminated, the Vibrio cholerae O1 or O139 strain is
demonstrated to be toxigenic.
