BENNION Hycal Energy Research Laboratories Ltd. B. LUNAN Lunan Holdings Ltd. J. SAPONJA Enercal Ltd. Abstract Uniderbalanced driling (UBD) is becoming increasingly uti- lized worldwide as an ailnative technique to conventional tvetbalanced dling o fee invasive near welbore formation damage problems in oil da gas prodvcing formations. tis also {ncressngly used as a méibod for low damage completion of ection ot disposal well sndbalanoed grilling’ reservoir pressure, reservoir fluid types and other factors. A dis ‘cassion of optimum opefating parameters with respect to the design and execution of an underbalanced drilling operation for ‘ particular reservoir application is provided. The selection of the appropriate type of equipment to be used Gointed pipe coiled tubing), mode of underbalance condition gener (Ghrough sting injection, parasite string or microannular injec- tion), base fluid selection (ol, water or gas), gasification medi- ‘um selection (nitrogen, oxygen content reduced air, at, fue gas, faturl gas) and surface equipment considerations for a given UBD operation, are reviewed. Introduction Underbalanced tilling (UBD) is utilized with increasing fre ‘quency as a method to increase oil and gas well profitability by feducing invasive formation damage to maximize production ‘costs, and 10 obvi- te various technical problems associated with typical overbal ing operations such as differential sticking and lost circulation. ‘There have been many cases in which underbalanced drilling has been spectacularly successful in providing added value tothe ‘operators utilizing the technology. These examples have been highly publicized and have resulted to some degree in the rapid increase in popularity of the technology. Unfortunately, there have also been many instances where the results from underbalanced drilling operations have been less successful. In many cases this is ‘ot due 10 a deficiency in the basic technology of underbalanced drilling, but rather is related to the faulty execution or inappropri- ‘ate application ofthe UBD technology. [Not every reservoir isan ideal candidate for an underbalanced
