• To analyze the various concepts behind renewable energy resources.
• To introduce the energy saving concept by different ways of illumination.

• To introduce knowledge on Solar Radiation and Solar Energy Collectors

UNIT I ELECTRIC DRIVES AND TRACTION 9
Fundamentals of electric drive - choice of an electric motor - application of motors for particular
services - traction motors - characteristic features of traction motor - systems of railway electrification -
electric braking - train movement and energy consumption - traction motor control - track equipment
and collection gear.
UNIT II ILLUMINATION 9
Introduction - definition and meaning of terms used in illumination engineering - classification of light
sources - incandescent lamps, sodium vapour lamps, mercury vapour lamps, fluorescent lamps –
design of illumination systems - indoor lighting schemes - factory lighting halls - outdoor lighting

 To Provide knowledge about the stand alone and grid connected renewable energy systems.
 To equip with required skills to derive the criteria for the design of power converters for renewable
energy applications.
 To analyse and comprehend the various operating modes of wind electrical generators and solar
energy systems.
 To design different power converters namely AC to DC, DC to DC and AC to AC converters for
renewable energy systems.
 To develop maximum power point tracking algorithms.

OBJECTIVES:
 To develop the ability to solve a specific problem right from its identification and literature
review till the successful solution of the same. To train the students in preparing project
reports and to face reviews and viva voce examination.

The students in a group of 3 to 4 works on a topic approved by the head of the department under the
guidance of a faculty member and prepares a comprehensive project report after completing the work
to the satisfaction of the supervisor. The progress of the project is evaluated based on a minimum of
three reviews. The review committee may be constituted by the Head of the Department. A project
report is required at the end of the semester. The project work is evaluated based on oral
presentation and the project report jointly by external and internal examiners constituted by the Head
of the Department.
TOTAL: 180 PERIODS
OUTCOMES:
 On Completion of the project work students will be in a position to take up any challenging
practical problems and find solution by formulating proper methodology.
