JPM Arts and Science College aims at uplifting the children of the educationally
and economically challenged agrarian families of the ‘Highranges’; irrespective
of religion, caste or creed; and bringing them into the network of higher educa-

 Department of
English
The presence of two eminent professors as visiting faculty; Prof.
Dr. Mathew Joseph, HoD & Vice-Principal (Rtd), St. Thomas College
Pala and Prof. (Rtd) T R S Iyer, St. Thomas College Pala; places
the Department at the forefront among English Departments of
similar colleges under the University. The Dept. offers both Under
Graduate and Post Graduate Degree programmes in English
Language and Literature. The undergraduate programme started
in the year 2010 and the Post graduate programme in 2011.
It is a full-fledged department with a team of thirteen Assistant
Professors and two visiting Professors who are committed to
their vocation of nurturing, shaping and nourishing young minds.
The department’s contribution to the fame and prestige of the
college has been immense. Apart from focusing on the amended
academic excellence of the students, department also facilitates
students to find and reach pertinent careers in various walks of
life. It has produced authors, teachers, researchers, actors, poets,
novelists, journalists, anchors and many to say. The department
provides intensive mentoring to our students both in and beyond
the classroom in a wide variety of forums. Ongoing lectures, film
screenings, symposia, conferences, and colloquia on interdisciplin-

Commerce

Department of commerce was established in the same year of the

inception of the college in 2008. The Department offers MCom,
B.Com Computer Application, B.Com Co-operation and B.Com
Finance & Taxation. It has resourceful & efficient faculty and is the
largest department with highest student strength in the college.
The vast experience of the Principal, Prof. Dr. V. V. Georgekutty as
Associate Professor of Commerce at St. Thomas College Pala and
as Controller of Examinations of University of Calicut as well as his
research exposure is an added resource for the Dept, especially
in project guidance. The Dept. conducts Conferences, Faculty De-
velopment Programs (FDP), Workshops and Seminars to motivate
the students and teachers and support career development.

The Department of Computer Science has the objective of

imparting quality education in the area of Computer Science. The
department offers Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and
M.Sc Computer Science. The Department has modern facilities

development works. With rapidly evolving technology and the

Department of Tourism was established in 2016 with the intro-

duction of Bachelor of Tourism Studies. In 2017, the six-semester
programme was renamed as Bachelor of Tourism and Travel
Management -BTTM. The Department conducts various outreach
programmes for the students. It is a registered member of World
Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an international environment club.
The Department conducts nature camps for students in association
with Kerala Forest Department. The Department has a biodiversity

The department of Social Work started functioning in the academic year

2020-21. The department offers BSW. The programmes aim at demon-
strating the relevance of social work interventions in dealing with social
issues and problems and also to strengthen its theoretical foundation.
We initiated a department that has unwavering focus on social devel-
opment specifically on the development of the marginalized communi-
ties- be it the minority communities, women, children, vulnerable and
backward caste groups, elderly, persons with disability or those affected
by disaster.

Debates and Discussion
As a student and also later in life every
person gets into debates and discussions.
These are important means to exchange
ideas. Debates help to improve knowl-
edge and reasoning skills. Debates and
discussions at JPM help students acquire
essential critical-thinking and presentation
skills. They acquire better poise, speech
delivery, and public speaking skills, improve
listening, note-taking skills and increase
self-confidence and enhance teamwork
skills and collaboration.
Seminars and Webinars
Departments conduct various seminars
and webinars to provide students with
intensive training and better exposure
to topics in the curriculum. Students are
expected to participate regularly in col-
lege-level seminars, including giving pre-
sentations and participating in discussions.
Attending a seminar has numerous ben-
efits, including improving communication
skills, gaining expert knowledge, network-
ing with others and renewing motivation
and confidence. A good number of national
and international seminars, workshops and
webinars have been organized under the
auspices of various departments through-
out the academic year.
Peer Teaching
Students learn a great deal by explaining
their ideas to others and by participating in
activities in which they can learn from their
peers. They develop skills in organizing
and planning learning activities, working
collaboratively with others, giving and
receiving feedback and evaluating their
own learning. JPM promotes peer-assisted
learning. Students are required to engage
peer teaching sessions.
Remedial teaching and
Mentoring
The objective of remedial teaching is to
give additional help to pupils who, for one
reason or another, have fallen behind the
rest of the class. The purpose of remedial
teaching involves individualized teaching of
students who are experiencing difficulties
in specific subject areas. JPM has special
scheme to ensure remedial teaching for
slow learners. Each student is personally
known to our teachers. Mentoring and
tutorial system in JPM aims at addressing
and study related problems of students
and enabling them better resolve issues
in life.
UGC NET JRF Exam Coaching
The National Eligibility Test (NET) is the
test for determining the eligibility for the
post of Assistant Professor and/or Junior
Research Fellowship (JRF) award in Indian
universities and colleges. Students in JPM
are provided with specialized coaching for
UGC-NET/JRF exam for better results. Along
with the regular classes as well as apart
from the class hours our experienced
teachers prepare students to appear for
NET exam.
Basics of Computing
It’s important for every student to know
fundamentals of computers. Knowledge
about the fundamentals of computer sci-
ence, internet, programming, web-pages,
etc. help them to build career successfully.
We ensure that our students are trained
with the basics of computer and informa-
tion technology along with the approved
curriculum.
Placement Assistance
The Placement Cell plays a crucial role in
locating job opportunities for Under Gradu-
ates and Post Graduates passing out from
the college by keeping in touch with reput-
ed firms and industrial establishments. The
Placement Cell operates round the year to
facilitate contacts between companies and
graduates. Placement Cell gives students
the opportunity to gain skills specific to
their subject or industry of choice as
well as the employability skills required
for real-life work. It also increases their
knowledge of an industry or sector,
allowing them to make better
informed decisions

Cell conducts various programmes with a

year we have succeeded in securing more
than 100 placements in reputed firms.
Diplomas and Add Ons
Add-on courses or certificate courses help
students learn additional subjects apart
from their main course. Over the years,
their importance has increased because
of various reasons and JPM now offers
add-on courses and certificate courses
on different areas. The aim is to provide
additional learner centric graded skill
oriented technical training, with the primary
objective of improving the employability
skills of students.
Start Ups
Startups may be small companies but they
can play a significant role in economic
growth. They create more jobs which
means more employment, and more em-
ployment means an improved economy. Not
only that, startups can also contribute to
economic dynamism by spurring innovation
and injecting competition. We encourage
students to be social entrepreneurs as
change makers who apply business princi-
ples to social causes. Within a short span
of time, we have a handful of successful
startups established by our students.

Extra- Curricular
Activities
NSS
The college has two units of National
Service Scheme with 300 volunteers. It
aims at training members in the spirit of
service and promotes opportunities for the
development of character and leadership
qualities. Students are encouraged to take
up membership and profit by the opportu-
nities for service activities. NSS certificates
holders get weightage marks for admission
to higher courses and also get grace mark.
National Cadet Corps (NCC)
A unit of NCC started functioning in the
college in 2020 with an intake of 35
cadets. The main purpose of the NCC is to
provide military training to the students,
inculcating in their minds the twin ideals of
duty and discipline. NCC provides oppor-
tunities for developing one’s physical and
intellectual potential. Students who qualify
to receive B and C certificates will find it
easy to get commissioned posts in army/
navy. Membership in the NCC entitles one
to get weightage in admissions to college/
university programmes. We have an
Army wing of NCC in the campus.

wide and diversified range of extracurricular activities are organized on the campus to meet diversi-
fied interests of the students.

UNAI Aspire active chapter working in the
campus.
Sports and Games
Physical education is part of the general
education programme. The college offers
facilities to students who are keen on
developing their potentials in sports and
games and thereby promoting qualities
of sportsmanship, team spirit and good
physique. The college encourages all
students who are interested in sports and
games and it provides all facilities for them.
Competitions have been held annually in
various games and for tracks and field
events.
Counseling Service
The college has qualified counselors to
provide counseling service to students in
order to equip them address issues and
challenges in life. Counseling support plays
a crucial role in the holistic development of
students.
Tourism Club
The Tourism Club of JPM is formed under
the auspices of the Department of
Travel and Tourism with the
intention of creating
awareness among the
youth about
Tourism Activities and there by promote
and tourism and related activities. The
Tourism Club of the college gets support
and guidance from the District Tourism
Promotion Council.
Computer/Language/Proj-
ect Labs
The computer labs of the college are
well equipped with eighty-five high-end
systems to cater to the needs of each and
every student. There is a separate lab for
the Post Graduate students and Add-On
courses. Language lab and project lab are
available for language studies and projects
works. There is free internet connectivity
and Wi-Fi with optical fiber facility.
Library
The primary purpose of the library is to
provide resources and services in a variety
of media to meet the needs of students
and teachers for education, information
and personal development including
recreation and leisure. JPM Library offers
the resources and encourages the thinking
process, creativity, inquisitiveness and
makes the learning more fruitful. Our
library provides more than fifteen thousand
textbooks and many periodicals, research
publications to students, teachers and re-
searchers. Libraries are said to be the pre-
cious life blood of a nation. We subscribe a
number of frontline national and interna-
tional journals, magazines, bimonthlies,
weeklies and newspapers as well. A new
block of international standards for central
library and information center has already
began on the campus and is expected to
be complete in this academic year.
JPM Post
JPM Post is a quarterly publication from
the college. It is unique in its kind and had
its first edition in the year 2012. It
serves as a canvas to students
to portray the latent
creativities among
them.

Awards and Achievements

Withing the short span of time from its inception, JPM has secured position at the frontiers with flying colours
in both academic and non-academic fields. Our students continue to secure best results at the university level
and score university ranks in each academic year. In certain years our students secured six university ranks
including first four. There is always an array of A+ and A grade holders and this academic achievement makes
JPM unique in the hearts of the students and the public alike.
Apart from the academics, our students show their best performances in intercollegiate and university level
fests and other competitive events. In sports and games, our students bagged remarkable achievements at
the university level.
The college is also an ISO 9001:2015 certified standard institution. The college has a vibrant IQAC cell that
regularly evaluates the performance in all aspects and preparing the college ready for accreditation by NAAC.
