in
Mathematics 9

Loberiano, Gerald N. Date:

Class Schedule:

I. Objective
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
 State the properties of parallelograms.
 Apply the properties of parallelograms in solving problems.
 Appreciate the importance of properties of parallelograms in solving real-life problems.

II. Subject matter

Topic: Solving Problems Involving Parallelograms
Reference: Grade 9 Learner’s Module, pp 317-318
Materials: Laptop, calculator, powerpoint

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Routinary Activities

Before we start our lesson, may I ask (Someone will lead the prayer)
to lead our prayer?

Good morning/afternoon, class! Good morning/afternoon, Sir!

Let me have first your attendance. Who is

absent this morning/afternoon? (Students will answer)

B. Motivation

Class, let’s have first a warm-up activity. In

this activity, I will be showing you the a
picture of the different types or classification
of quadrilateral and your task is to identify
the name of that quadrilateral.

Is my instruction clear? Yes,Sir!

PARALLELOGRAM

RHOMBUS

RECTANGLE

SQUARE

TRAPEZOID

KITE
C. Review
What was the topic you have learned last meeting?
It was all about solving different problems
involving parallelograms, trapezoids and kites
using their properties.

Very Good!

D. Activity
Class, let’s have another activity. In this activity, I
will give you an illustration of a parallelogram and
its given information. Then you will answer the
questions that follow. You will be given 5 minutes
Yes, Sir!
to do this activity. Did you understood?

Given: AB = (3x-5)cm, BC = (2y-7)cm, CD =

(x+7)cm and AD = (y+3)cm.

Questions;
1. 3x-5 = x+7
1. What is the value of x? 3x-x = 7+5
2. How long is AB? 2x/2 = 12/2
x=6
3. What is the value of y?
2. AB = (3x-5)cm
4. How long is AD? AB = [3(6)-5]cm
5. What is the perimeter of the parallelogram AB = (18-5)cm
ABCD? AB = 13cm

3. y+3 = 2y-7
y-2y = -7-3
-y = -10
y = 10
4. AD = (y+3)cm
AD = (10+3)cm
AD = 13cm

5. Perimeter= 13cm+13cm+13cm+13cm
= 52 cm

 Analysis
 What property of parallelogram did you used
to determine the lengths of AB and AD? The opposite sides of a parallelogram are
congruent.
 Based on your activity, what is the value of
x and y? How did you obtained it?
The value of x is 6 and the value of y is 10. We
obtained the values of the x and y by applying
the first property of parallelogram.

 If the length of AB is 18, what do you think

will be the length of DC? Why do you think The length of DC will be also 18 since AB and
so? DC are opposite sides because in parallelogram,
opposite sides are always congruent.

 Aside from the property that is mentioned in

this activity, what are the other properties of The other properties of a parallelogram
parallelogram? includes;
 Any two opposite angles are congruent.
 Any two consecutive angles are
supplementary.
 The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect
each other.
 A diagonal of a parallelogram forms two
congruent triangleS.

 Abstraction
Our topic this morning/afternoon will be just
a continuation of the topic which is solving
problems specifically on parallelograms.

Let’s have an example of problems

involving parallelograms.

1. A tablecloth is cut into a parallelogram

into which two opposite angles measure (9x-
20)° and (6x+16)° . Find the measures of all
the angles.
First, we will find the value of x.
9x-20 = 6x+16
9x-6x = 16+20
3x/x = 36/3
x = 12

Then, substitute the value of x in the measures

of the angles m<1 and m<3.

m<1= 9x-20
m<1= 9(12)-20
m<1= 108-20
m<1= 88° .

Since <1 and <3 are congruent, therefore the

value of <3 is also 88° .

To find m<2 and m<4, we will apply another

property of parallelogram which states that
consecutive angles are supplementary.

m<2 = 180° - 88°

m<2 = 92°

Since <2 and <4 are congruent, therefore the

value of <4 is also 92° .

Therefore, the measures of all the angles are 88

° , 92° , 88° and 92° .

2. Two consecutive sides of a parallelogram

measures 5m and 10m, respectively. What is
the perimeter of the parallelogram?

P= 2L+2W
P= 2(10m)+2(5m)
P=20m+10m
P=30m
3. One diagonal of a square measure
(2x+4)in. If the other diagonal measures 20
in., what is x?
2x+4=20
2x=20-4
2x/2=16/2
x=8

IV. Application
Solve the problem below and show your
solutions. Write your answer in a 1/4 sheet
of paper.

Find the area of a rectangular garden if its

perimeter is 36m and its length is 10m.

P = 2l+2w
36m=2(10m)+2w
36m = 20m+2w
36m-20m = 2w
16m/2 = 2w/2
8m = w

A = lw
A = (10m)(8m)
A= 80 m2
V. Evaluation
Solve the problem below and show your
solutions. Write your answer in a 1/4 sheet
of paper.

A rectangle garden has a perimeter of 50ft. It

length is 5ft less than twice the width. What
is the area of the garden?
P = 2l+2w
50ft.=2(2w-5)ft+2w
50ft. = 4w-10ft+2w
50ft.+10ft=6w
60ft./6=6w/6
10ft.=w

l = (2w-5)ft.
l = 2(10ft)-5ft
l = 20ft-5ft
l = 15ft

A = lw
A = (15ft)(10ft)
A= 150 ft 2

VI. Assignment
Solve the problem by applying the properties
on parallelogram. Write your answer in a 1/4
sheet of paper.

WXYZ is a parallelogram. If m<Z = 80° ,

and m<Y = 6x-20, find the value of x.

6x-20+80=180
6x+60=180
6x=180-60
6x/x=120/6
x=20
