Student 1.2A has been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa and Macular Edema based on an eye exam from March 23, 2011. Retinitis Pigmentosa causes progressive vision loss starting with night blindness and peripheral vision loss. Macular Edema causes temporary decreased vision. The student also has astigmatism and myopia, which are corrected to 20/40 vision. Visual field testing found remaining fields of 25 degrees in both eyes. It is recommended the student wear glasses at all times with plastic lenses and have above average lighting in environments.

Etiology and Prognosis
In the most recent eye report, dated 3/23/2011, it was stated that student 1.2A has an Autosomal Dominant genetic mutation that preceded a diagnosis of Retinitis Pigmentosa. Student 1.2A also has a diagnosis of Macular Edema. Retinitis Pigmentosa is medically defined as a hereditary condition which causes progressive retinal degeneration in both eyes. Night blindness is followed by loss of peripheral vision, progressing over many years to tunnel vision and finally blindness. Macular Edema is defined as retinal swelling and cyst formation in the macular area. This usually results in temporary decrease in vision. Retinitis Pigmentosa is a degenerative condition which causes deteriorating vision over time. Secondary/Accompanying Visual Conditions Student 1.2A has a prescription that indicates astigmatism and myopia in both eyes. Astigmatism is defined as the inability of the eye to focus sharply at any distance, usually result from a spoon like shape of a normally spherical corneal surface. Myopia is defined as a focusing defect created by an overpowered eye. Myopic people see close-up objects clearly, but distance vision is blurry. Visual Acuities Student 1.2A has a distance vision with correction (CC) of 20/40 in the right eye (O.D.), 20/40 in the left eye (O.S.), and 20/40 in both eyes (O.U.). Student 1.2A can read the “J1” line on the Jaeger Scale with correction (CC). The student’s corresponding A.M.A. notation score would be 14/14 inches. This indicates that someone with normal near vision would be able to see the same as what this student does. The corresponding font size this student could see is a 5 point font. Visual Fields Student 1.2A has a loss in the field of vision. According to the report, the widest diameter in degrees of the remaining visual field in the right eye (O.D.) is 25°. In the left eye, the remaining visual field is also 25°. Recommendations It is recommended that student 1.2A wears glasses constantly with a plastic lens. It is also recommended that the lighting requirements in the student’s environment be better than average. Caution should be exerted in gym class when participating in sports that use objects that may be flying in and out of the student’s peripheral vision.
