Activity 1.5 Trade Agreements
Instructions:

● Identify agreements between Mexico and the countries chosen.

● Mention and explain the trade agreement Mexico has with the target country.
● What type of trade agreement is it?
● What does the trade agreement say that may ease our export?

USA
● United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)
● The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) entered into force on July 1, 2020.
The USMCA, which substituted the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is a
mutually beneficial win for North American workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses. The
Agreement creates more balanced, reciprocal trade supporting high-paying jobs for
Americans and grow the North American economy.
● Agreement highlights include:
○ Creating a more level playing field for American workers, including improved rules
of origin for automobiles, trucks, other products, and disciplines on currency
manipulation.
○ Benefiting American farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses by modernizing and
strengthening food and agriculture trade in North America.
○ Supporting a 21st Century economy through new protections for U.S. intellectual
property, and ensuring opportunities for trade in U.S. services.
○ New chapters covering Digital Trade, Anti Corruption, and Good Regulatory
Practices, as well as a chapter devoted to ensuring that Small and Medium Sized
Enterprises benefit from the Agreement.
(United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, 2020)

The U.S.-Canada-Mexico Agreement may lead to a certain friendliness towards

Mexico and Canada in the escalation of U.S. tariffs. However, a more beneficial and
interesting effect would be the reestablishment of friendship between the three
countries.

Despite all the hesitations and doubts, we can conclude that the USMCA brings a
positive approach. Initially, it benefits Mexico and Canada by creating trade
opportunities recognized by the United States. (USMCA: Un Acercamiento Para
Entenderlo Mejor - IPADE Business School, 2019)

Germany

● Mexico-European Union Free Trade Agreement (TLCUEM)

● Since July 2000, Mexico and the European Union (EU) put into force a Free Trade
Agreement (EU-Mexico FTA), which is part of the EU-Mexico Economic Partnership,
Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement, which also seeks to foster political
dialogue and intensify cooperation between the two parties.
● The EU-Mexico FTA, the first free trade agreement between the American and European
continents, has generated a significant growth in bilateral trade and investment flows.
● The main benefits of the EU-Mexico FTA are:
○ Broad, preferential and secure access for Mexican exports to the world's largest
trading bloc.
○ Increase in Mexican exports.
○ Increasing the available supply of inputs and services for domestic industry.
○ Increased productive investment and technology transfer.
○ Diversification of Mexican export destinations, sources of inputs, and Mexico's
economic relations.
○ Generation of more and better jobs.
○ Legal security and preferential access conditions required by small and medium-sized
enterprises to join the export sector.
● New chapters were added to the EU-Mexico FTA covering issues that could be of interest to
Pure Earth:
○ SME Chapter. It covers the integration of small and medium-sized enterprises into
bilateral trade with the elimination of non-tariff barriers, simpler requirements for
rules of origin and convergence between EU and Mexican standards.
○ Anti-corruption chapter: import and export processes will be regulated to prevent
improper practices between customs agents and authorities, as well as between
private actors.
○ Digital commerce chapter: The aim is to regulate commercial practices that take place
on the internet in order to avoid fraud, scams, smuggling, overpricing or any other
dishonest commercial practices.
○ Trade and sustainable development chapter: The creation of this chapter will promote
the efficient use of resources, with an emphasis on the protection of biodiversity.
