to justify the __18__ cost of producing them. More and more this is translating into increased
sensitivity to foreigners' perceptions and sensibilities. __19__ a pro-American stance may work
well in Nebraska, in Nepal it may turn people away from the theaters, thus spelling disaster for a

Google says it has developed an artificial intelligence system that can detect the presence of
breast cancer more accurately than doctors.

A study that tested the accuracy of the system, which was developed through a collaboration
between the tech giant and cancer researchers, was published in the scientific journal Nature. The
program was trained to detect cancer using tens of thousands of mammograms from women in the
United Kingdom and the United States, and early research shows it can produce more accurate
detection than human radiologists.

According to the study, using the Al technology resulted in fewer false positives, where test
results suggest cancer is present when it isn’t, and false negatives, where an existing cancer goes
undetected. The Al system was more accurate despite it having less information to work with than
human experts, such as patient histories and prior mammograms.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among cancers in women, although
outcomes improve considerably if the disease is caught and treated early, the authors of the study
say. Yet despite large-scale breast cancer screening programs in developed countries, screening
mammograms do not find about one in five breast cancers, according to the American Cancer
Society. “The performance of even the best doctors leaves room for improvement,” the study’s
authors wrote. “Al may be uniquely positioned to help with this challenge.” The technology could
also be used to address shortages in radiologists, they say.

The detection and diagnosis of breast cancer sits alongside other Google research that
demonstrates how Al can help doctors to more accurately predict lung cancer and prevent serious
eye disease. Hopefully, with early detection via Al, cancer can be detected and patients can be back
on their feet in no time.

35. What is the passage mainly about?

(A) New research showing how cancer spreads in men
(B) How Google Al outperformed doctors in a test
(C) Why breast cancer is the most lethal cancer
(D) How technology helps cancer patients live comfortably

36. What percentage of breast cancers go undetected by screening mammograms?

(A) About 1%
(B) About 5%
(C) About 20%
(D) About 80%

37. Aside from breast cancer, in which other part of the body can Al help to predict cancer?
(A) A
(B) B
(C) C
(D) D
38. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of Al-assisted medical care?
(A) Optimistic
(B) Pessimistic
(C) Uncertain
(D) Indifferent

第 39-42 題為題組

The build-up of garbage is a big problem around the world because populations are on the rise.
Therefore, many people like to adopt Earth-friendly practices to cut down on the amount of garbage
they create.

One little-known solution is called vermicomposting, or worm composting. This method uses
worms to break down organic waste into nutrient-rich soil. It is not only easy but also space-saving,
as no backyard is required. Vermicomposting uses red worms, also known as red wigglers. These
hungry earthworms can devour half of their weight in food scraps a day. One great advantage of
using worms to do the work is that they prevent the strong odors that are normally associated with
composting.

To set up your own worm bin for composting, start with a container that is around 12 to 15
inches deep. Don’t use a container that is too deep because earthworms like to stay near the surface
of the soil so that they can breathe. Next, a lid is needed to keep fruit flies and other common
household pests at bay. Bedding can be made of shredded newspaper, cardboard, or leaf litter, plus a
little peat moss that has been dampened by a bit of water. Choose a shady spot for your bin, which
should stay at warm—rather than high—temperatures.

Worms perform best when eating vegetarian meals. This means that meat and dairy
waste—which can also attract pests—should be avoided. However, crushed eggshells add calcium
to the worms’ diet and can prevent acidic conditions from developing in the bin. Rotate frequently
where new scraps are buried in the bin, and after three months, or when none of the bedding
remains, your soil can be harvested.

Vermicomposting is a simple way for families to be more environmentally conscious and

simultaneously to get something usable in return. It’s a win-win situation that both humans and
worms can benefit from.
39. What is the main idea of the article?
(A) All countries face environmental problems.
(B) Worms have a preference for vegetarian meals.
(C) Red wiggler worms are very versatile creatures.
(D) Vermicomposting is a great way to reduce garbage.

40. According to the article, why does the writer suggest people use worms to compost waste?
(A) Because they are cheap
(B) To avoid horrible smells
(C) Because they are common unit
(D) To attract other garden pests

41. Which of these is NOT a feature of a successful worm bin?

(A) A moderately deep container
(B) Keeping the bin in a chilly place
(C) A small amount of moist peat moss
(D) A lid to deter unwanted insects or animals

42. Why are eggshells mentioned in the article?

(A) Eggshells should not be part of the worms’ staple diet.
(B) Eggshells can effectively avoid the temperature increase.
(C) Eggshells can keep acidity levels in the bin under control.
(D) Eggshells are the red wiggler worms’ main source of food.

第 43-46 題為題組

Conservationists have worked for decades to protect great apes—gorillas, orangutans,

chimpanzees, and bonobos—from human harm. But a new project started by bioethicists goes even
further. Called the Great Ape Project, it advocates granting great apes certain personal rights. These
include the right to life and the right to liberty—rights which have traditionally belonged only to
people.

Scientists who study great apes have long recognized their similarity to humans. Biologists say
we have over 90 percent of our DNA in common with great apes, making them our closest animal
relatives. But apes share more than just our genes. Like us, they also have intelligent minds and
complex feelings. They are sensitive social animals that use tools and language, learn from each
other, form close bonds, and grieve when a loved one dies. Unlike most other animals, they even
appear to be self-aware, and can recognize themselves in mirrors.

Yet despite their closeness to humans, apes have been exploited, abused, tortured, and killed.
People have kept them in small cages, forced them to perform for audiences, subjected them to
painful experiments, and harvested them for food. In hunting and capturing the animals, humans
have torn ape families and communities apart. Encroachment on their habitat has also endangered
the survival of all of the great ape species.

The members of the Great Ape Project assert that we humans should be less self-centered and
show more respect to these self-aware beings. They do not say that apes should become members of
human society with normal adult privileges such as driving and voting; for they are not capable of
either. Nor do they say that all apes currently in captivity should be released into the wild; for many
would not survive. They do say, however, that all apes, both captive and free, should be treated with
dignity, and not as mere objects for us to do whatever we want with. From a moral standpoint, they
say, great apes are our equals, and have a legitimate right to share our planet with a minimum of
human interference.

43. Which idea is not supported by bioethicists?

(A) All apes in cages should be released back into their natural habitats.
(B) Apes should be treated as global citizens and have the right to share the earth with humans.
(C) Apes should have rights which have traditionally belonged only to humans.
(D) All apes should have the right to be free from human interference.
44. According to the passage, humans have done all of the following to apes EXC EP T ______.
(A) take them away from their family members
(B) have them do tricks at circus shows
(C) test new medicine on them in laboratories
(D) make clothes out of their fur
45. Which statement suggests that apes have complex feelings?
(A) They are intelligent animals.
(B) They use tools and learn from each other.
(C) They grieve when their loved ones die.
(D) They can recognize themselves in mirrors.
46. Apes are human beings' closest animal relatives in terms of ______.
(A) human rights (B) evolution (C) survival skills (D) civilization
第貳部分:混合題(10%)
說明:第47-46題,本部分共有1題組,每格2分。答案必須寫在「答題卷」標示題號之作答區
內,非選擇題請由左至右橫式書寫,作答時不必抄題。
Apparently we humans are the most intelligent species on the planet, but it turns out that many
of our ideas about other animals are mistaken. Here are some commonly-held beliefs about animals
that simply aren’t true.

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, can you? Most dogs are perfectly capable of learning at
any age. It takes about 15 minutes a day for two weeks to train your dog to do simple tasks like
sitting or fetching. While a newborn puppy might be too young, an old dog in good shape shouldn’t
have a problem. Touching a toad can give you warts, can’t it? It’s true that warts are contagious, but
you won’t get them from toads. These creatures, which are small animals similar to frogs, often
have bumps on their skin that resemble warts. It could be what inspired this myth. Bats cannot see,
can they? This is a very commonly believed myth, but while many bats use echoes to assist them in
flight, they also rely on vision. A camel carries water in its hump, doesn’t it? Not so! A camel’s
hump is filled with fat. If the fat were distributed around its body, a camel’s body heat would be
uncomfortably high in the hot desert. It is true, however, that camels can go up to seven months
without water.

It might be easy to get the wrong idea about animals that we don’t come across very frequently.
However, you don’t need to be an animal expert to separate the truth from the myths. If you want to
be as wise as an owl, just check the facts!

47. What does “in good shape” mean in paragraph two?

(A) To be physically large

(B) To be intelligent
(C) To be healthy
(D) To be cared for

48. What is the author’s claim in this passage?

(A) Human beings are not the center of the universe.

(B) People mostly use stereotypes to judge things. ,

(C) Even many vets do not separate fact from myth.

(D) Humans often misunderstand animals.
49. The graph below represents the five senses we are familiar with.
Which ones are NOT mentioned in the article?
