3. What nature of business incurred the most? Why do you think it’s the most in the
community?

Out of 64 registered businesses on the list of our survey, 32 businesses were

merchandising. Therefore, the nature of business incurred the most is merchandising. This
is also known as “buy and sell” business in which an owner or merchandising company
purchases goods in bulk that are ready for sale and then sell them to customers at retail
price. It is the most common in the community because this nature of business does not
require lots of resources such as human resource or manpower. Thus, labor cost is lesser
compared to manufacturing and service businesses. Moreover, residents of our community
mostly belong to a working class. They are those people who engage in “manual labor” with
little or no prestige. Hence, merchandising is the best choice for them when starting a
business with small capital but could generate better profits. Lastly, this nature of business is
the most common today because wholesalers do not need to find a supplier for their raw
materials since they will just purchase a ready-made product and add a certain mark-up to
its cost price. Therefore, merchandising is very easy in terms of formation and convenient for
our community who has a lot of start-up businesses.

4. After classifying, what type of organization incurred the most? Why do you think it’s the
most used nature of business in the community?

Based on our survey, there are 57 sole proprietorship type of businesses in the
community. This is the most used type of business because it is simple yet with several
advantages. Sole proprietorship has easy and inexpensive process, few government
regulations, and tax advantages. Hence, in our community sole proprietors are continuously
increasing in numbers because of its ease of formation. It does not require a lot of paper
works and there are less registration fees in the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Moreover, our community has low population density since we are in a rural area hence big
corporate companies do not operate in our area. Lastly, most of the residents are doing
business because of their interest and the hope to provide their family’s daily necessity. Most
of them lack knowledge about forming business like partnerships and corporation since it is
more complicated than sole proprietorship. They need more guidance from the experts. Thus,
seminars and symposium about building a business would be of great help to them.
