SYLLABUS

I. Subject Code : BESC 105


II. Subject Title : ART APPRECIATION (HUMANITIES)
III. Course Description:

Art Appreciation focuses on the development of aesthetic sense and basic art
forms through the centuries with emphasis on the basic tenets of art criticism, this course
provides a critical view towards Western, Asian and most important, Philippine art.

IV. Prerequisite : None


V. Credit : Three (3) Units
VI. Objectives :

1. To investigate and evaluate the development of artworks, the succession of artistic


styles and tastes from ancient times to the 20th century.
2. To gain a sense of appreciation for art, and a deeper, non-superficial understanding of
such works.
3. To utilize and employ the techniques of art criticism and discrimination, amidst a
flood of vulgar, mediocre, and the bastardized.

II. Painting (Visual Art) 8.5
Introductory activity: A film review of “The Thomas Crowne Affair,” or” Incognito”
A. What is painting?
B. Elements of Painting
C. Evolution of Painting
D. Survey of Philippine Painting

Alternative class/workshop:
1. Students will be required to have a sketchpad and any drawing medium of
their choice (either watercolor, oil, charcoal, Cray pass , pastel ,etc.)
2. They will be sketching/painting at least nine (9) subjects of their choice
around the campus.

III. Sculpture (Visual Arts) 8.5


Introductory activity: A film review of “Greece”
A. What is sculpture?
B. Elements of sculpture
C. Evolution of sculpture
D. Survey of Philippine Sculpture
Alternative class/workshop:
1. Students will be required to have a sculpting medium of their choice.
Example, if they would like to apply the method of:
a. Carving – by using soap or detergent bar, the students can create
shape by subtracting soap parts.
b. Modeling- by using clay, the students can create shape by adding
parts
Their respective professor will choose the subject of their sculpture.
2. The students will be visiting a museum and they will be required to do a
reaction paper about this.

painting and sculpture in shaping history, culture and civilization of man and his generation)

Introductory activity: A film review of “Arlkitektura”
A. What is architecture?
B. Elements of architecture
C. Evolution of architecture
D. Survey of Philippine architecture
Alternative class/workshop:
1. Students and instructor should be able to visit Museo de La Salle for them to
have insights regarding Philippine architecture and its historical foundations.
A reaction paper should be submitted.
V. Music 5.5
Introductory activity: Appreciative listening to different music genres
A. What is music?
B. Elements of Music
C. Evolution of Music
D. Survey of Philippine Music

Core Value: FAITH (Students will be able to realize that through the contributions of various
generations in the evolution of building structures and the musical genres, that human
civilizations are believed to be directed in continuous improvement and enhancement of
societies)

MIDTERM EXAMS
VI. Performing Arts 8.5
A. Theater

Alternative class/workshop:
1. The students will be required to view different genres of films. Reaction papers
will be submitted.
As a final requirement, the class will be divided into groups that will showcase
the varying talents of the students in singing, dancing, and acting (performing
arts).

Core Value: COMMUNITY (Though man is a by product of different, sometimes conflicting


cultures, beliefs and backgrounds as reflected on how he interprets himself and his society in the
arts, specifically performing arts it is directed in making him refined and cultured. And this
affects how future generations will be shaped in their tastes, personality and styles in interpreting
art.)

X. Grading System
The grading system that will be followed shall be ABSOLUTE , based on the
following percentage distribution:

Class Standing: 60%
Quizzes/Long Quiz 20%
Recitation 20%
Project/Assignments 20%
Attendance: 10%
Major Exam: 30%
100%

Final Grade= 1/3 Prelim + 1/3 Midterm + 1/3 Final Term


The passing grade is1.0 = 60%
