Boracay Closure/ Rehabilitation Reaction Short Research

Background

Several tourists fly miles away just to visit the exquisite beaches in the Philippines; one of them
is Boracay, located in Western Visayas Region. Boracay Island is eminent for its crystal clear blue sea and
fine sand. There are also great quantities of activities to do in Boracay that result to being a travel spot.
Furthermore, it was featured internationally due to its magnificent environment. Numerous
establishments were alive and offer products and services among people in Boracay. Experiencing night
life is also well-known thing to do in the Island. Due to popularity, it has been the most visited island in
the country however, as population arises as wastes produces rapidly. There are several issues
encountered in Boracay before its rehabilitation such as waste was draining into the sea and damaging
the ocean as a result of unmanaged development, insufficient waste water treatment facilities, and
sewage facilities. The beauty of Boracay came to an end and faced consequences.

Analysis

Government implemented rehabilitation in Boracay and closed it for six months to restore the
habitat and improve the marine ecosystem. Nature in Boracay was truly wrecked, disappearance of
wetlands occurred, beach erosions, polluted waste along the shore, to the point that it needs high
maintenance fixations. However, the industry suffered from repercussions, for instance, people lost
their jobs resulting to unemployment, and demolition of establishments near the shore, economic
conditions affected the hospitality industry, and income loss of the businesses. Although there are
outturns, rehabilitation became the best option to beautify and restore the normal image of Boracay.

Recommendation

Local Government should study how to maintain rightfully the environment of Boracay Island.
They could administer additional laws that will protect the whole surroundings and marine ecosystem.
Government should strictly carry out the environmental laws, so that people will abide and be in order.
Also, encouraging practicing proper waste management like assigning conventional trash bins in
different areas of Boracay would help to avoid littering that can cause harmful effect on the marine
ecosystem. Moreover, local government should mobilize seawater guards to be able to supervise the
sewage dumps. They need to investigate and learn the preservation of water treatment facilities that
could last long. Overall, if government will neglect to maintain and just rely with the six-month
rehabilitation of Boracay, it will surely not preserve the hard work of beautification they executed.
