Overview for airport sector

Worldwide airport figures and trends

• Around 2000 airports located in 176 countries

• Airport passenger numbers raised up to 8.3 billion –
an increase of 30% in 5 Years
• Cargo volume grew to around 120 million metric tons
• Aircraft movements increased by 20% to 96 Million

Managing aircraft, passengers and luggage are key businesses of Airports,

leading to many other activities. Maintaining the airport in optimal conditions
to ensure safety and enable the operation of movement is the major
challenge.
Recent focus in development spreads to better connectivity for
passengers as well as more interconnection between separated systems
without undermining standards regarding safety and security.

Certified standards

WinCC OA is SIL3 certified according to IEC 61508. TUEV Sued approved that WinCC OA
IEC 61508 functions, development processes and supporting documents are conform to IEC standard. We
(SIL 3) provide a guideline, which describes basic and operational conditions within which WinCC OA
can be used for security critical applications.
OPC UA is getting a common standard more and more. This is also based on the fact, it can be
OPC UA used as universal protocol to connect different devices to one system. WinCC OA is certified by
OPC foundation for OPC UA Server and Client functionalities.
BACnet provides integrated Online-/Offline Engineering solution and an object library for building
BACNet management. Designed for Heating-, Refrigerating- Air-Conditioning-, Lighting- and Security
(B-OWS)
Control. Certified via BACNet International based on requirements fulfilling B-OWS functionality.

For safety projects ProfiNET and ProfiSAFE are a proven way to establish secure connections
ProfiNET /
between the periphery including PLCs and the core system. The new drivers allow to connect
ProfiSAFE directly without any changes in the PLC to another protocol. So a persistent connection within one
(Client) standard can be granted.

IEC 61443 is the new standard for security related projects. WinCC OA is already certified
IEC
according to 61443-4-1 and is in reach to get certified to -4-2 with the new product version. More
61443-4-1 than that it is possible for Asset Owners to certify based on IEC 62443 3-3 with the existing
61443-4-2 preconditions provided by OA.

Security information

Siemens provides products and solutions with industrial security functions that support the secure operation of plants,
systems, machines and networks. In order to protect plants, systems, machines and networks against cyber threats, it is
necessary to implement – and continuously maintain – a holistic, state-of-the-art industrial security concept. Siemens’
products and solutions only form one element of such a concept.

Customer is responsible to prevent unauthorized access to its plants, systems, machines and networks. Systems,
machines and components should only be connected to the enterprise network or the internet if and to the extent
necessary and with appropriate security measures (e.g. use of firewalls and network segmentation) in place.
Additionally, Siemens’ guidance on appropriate security measures should be taken into account. For more information
about industrial security, please visit http://www.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.

Siemens’ products and solutions undergo continuous development to make them more secure. Siemens strongly
recommends to apply product updates as soon as available and to always use the latest product versions. Use of
product versions that are no longer supported, and failure to apply latest updates may increase customer’s exposure to
cyber threats.

To stay informed about product updates, subscribe to the Siemens Industrial Security RSS Feed under
