Sheet 2 (Liquid state)

1. The vapour pressure of carbon disulfide, CS 2, is 0.526 at 301 K. What is the

vapour pressure of CS2 at 273 K? The enthalpy of vaporization of CS 2 over this
temperature range is 27.6 KJ/mol.

2. What is the boiling point of water at a pressure of 0.695 atm? The enthalpy of
vaporization of water may be taken as 40.7 KJ/mol.

3. It is desired to produce superheated steam at 120 oC. Under what pressure must
water be boiled to achieve this? Normal boiling point of water = 100 oC. Latent
heat sof vaporization of water = 39.70 KJ/mol-1.

4. The enthalpy of vaporization of benzene, C 6H6(l), is 33.9KJ mol-1 at 298K. How

many liters of C6H6(g), measured at 298K and 95.1 mmHg, are formed when
1.54KJ is absorbed by C6H6(l) at constant temperature of 298K?

5. Differentiate between the phase diagram of water and Carbon dioxide?

6. The normal boiling point of chloroform. CHCL 3, is 334 K. At 328 K, the vapour
pressure of chloroform is 0.824 atm. What is the enthalpy of vaporization of
chloroform for this temperature range?

7. Two substances A & B have the same vapour pressure of 0.132 atm. At 15 oC, A
has a heat of vaporization 25000 j/mole whereas B 35000 j/mole, which of them
has higher normal boiling point?

8. Benzaldehyde has a normal boiling point of 179oC and a critical point at 422 oC
and 45.9 atm. Estimate its vapor pressure at 100 oC?

9. Define the following scientific terms: Latent heat of vaporization – V.P of

liquids – Normal boiling points.
