MORD AND AMAZON INKS MOU FOR ONLINE MARKETING

On May 12 2022, The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) and Amazon


Seller Services Private Limited (Amazon) signed a Non-Financial
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi.

This MoU will enable the Self Help Group (SHG) entrepreneurs under
Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-
NRLM) to offer their products to the buyers across India through Amazon
Saheli Storefront.

INDIA’S FIRST GREENFIELD GRAIN-BASED ETHANOL
PRODUCTION PLANT INAUGURATED IN BIHAR
Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, opened the country’s first
greenfield grain-based ethanol factory in Purnia(or Purnea), Bihar on 30th
April 2022 and indicated that ethanol production would help cut the cost of
petrol while also creating jobs.

This plant is set to produce 65,000 litres of ethanol per day and it will need
150 tons of maize and rice every day.

SHRI PARSHOTTAM RUPALA RELEASES BREED-WISE
REPORT OF LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY BASED ON 20TH
LIVESTOCK CENSUS
The report has covered 184 recognized indigenous/exotic &
crossbred breeds of 19 selected species that are registered by the
NBAGR (National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources).

There are 41 recognized indigenous whereas 4 exotic/crossbred breeds


of cattle covered in this report.

As per the report, the Exotic and Crossbred animal contribute


nearly 26.5% of the total cattle population whereas 73.5% are
Indigenous and Non-descript cattle.
Crossbred Jersey has the highest share with 49.3% as compared to
39.3% of Crossbred Holstein Friesian (HF) in total Exotic/Crossbred
cattle. Gir, Lakhimi and Sahiwal breeds have major contribution in
total Indigenous Cattle.

In Buffalo, the Murrah breed majorly contributes with 42.8% which


is commonly found in UP and Rajasthan.

In Sheep, there are 3 exotics and 26 indigenous breeds were found in


the country.

Among the pure exotic breeds, Corriedale breed majorly contributes


with 17.3% and in the indigenous breeds the Nellore breed contribute
the highest in the category with 20.0% share.
In Goats, there are 28 indigenous breeds found in the country. The
Black Bengal breed contributes the highest with 18.6%.

In exotic/crossbred pigs, crossbred pig contributes 86.6%


whereas Yorkshire contributes majorly with 8.4%. In indigenous pigs,
Doom breed major contributes with 3.9%.

In Horse & Ponies, the share of Marwari breed majorly contributes


with 9.8%.

In Donkeys, the share of Spiti breed contributes with 8.3%. ∙ In Camel,


Bikaneri breed majorly contributes with 29.6%.

In Poultry, desi fowl, Aseel breed majorly contribute in both


backyard poultry and commercial poultry farm.

ASSAM GETS COW AMBULANCE SERVICE
An ambulance service for sick and injured cows was inaugurated in
Assam's Dibrugarh district. The service, to be run by Gopal
Gaushala, was inaugurated by Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner
Biswajit Pegu on Friday.

The 'gaushala' or chow shelter had also set up a hospital for cows
here in 2020.

MAHARASHTRA CABINET APPROVED FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND
‘MAHARASHTRA GENE BANK PROJECT’
Maharashtra Cabinet approved the ‘Maharashtra Gene Bank’, a first-of-its-
kind project in India. To conserve genetic resources in Maharashtra
including marine diversity, seeds of local crops, and animal diversity. In the
next five years, an amount of Rs 172.39 crores will be spent on these seven
focus areas.
The ‘Maharashtra Gene Bank Project’ will work on seven themes:
1. Marine biodiversity
2. Local crop/seed varieties
3. Indigenous cattle breeds
4. Freshwater biodiversity
5. Grassland, scrubland, and animal grazing land biodiversity
6. Conservation and management plans for areas under forest right
7. Rejuvenation of forest areas.

WORLD Food Prize 2022
On May 5, 2022, The Des Moines-based World Food Prize Foundation
has conferred the World Food Prize 2022 to National Aeronautics and
Space Administration’s (NASA) Cynthia Rosenzweig, an American
agronomist and climatologist, in recognition of her modelling of the
climate crisis’ impact on food production

The 2022 World Food Prize Laureate was announced by Barbara


Stinson, President of the World Food Prize Foundation during a
ceremony hosted by the United States(US) Department of State.

Her modelling work has provided a foundation for decision-makers


around the world to create strategies to mitigate climate change and
adapt our food systems to a changing planet, which has helped
communities worldwide address the consequences of Earth’s changing
climate.

The United Nations (UN)’s World Tuna
Day is annually observed across the
globe on 2nd May to create awareness
about the importance of tuna resources
for food security and nutrition, economic
development, employment,
government revenue, livelihoods, culture
and recreation. The first-ever World Tuna
Day was observed on 2nd May 2017.
UN’S FIRST INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PLANT HEALTH – 12TH
MAY 2022
The United Nations(UN)’s International Day of Plant Health (IDPH) is
annually observed across the globe on 12th May to create global awareness on
the importance of plant health towards end hunger, reduce poverty,
protect biodiversity and the environment, and boost economic development.
12th May 2022 marks the observance of the first ever International Day of
Plant Health.
WORLD BEE DAY 2022
The United Nations(UN)’s World
Bee Day is annually observed
across the globe on 20th May to
raise awareness of the essential
role bees and other
pollinators play in keeping people
and the planet healthy.

The theme of World Bee Day


2022 is ‘Bee Engaged:
Celebrating the diversity of
bees and beekeeping systems’.
INTERNATIONAL TEA DAY 2022
The United Nations(UN) International Tea Day is annually observed across
the globe on 21st May to promote the production and consumption of tea
across the globe and to create awareness about the significance of tea in
combating global poverty and hunger.

The day is observed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the


United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with other relevant organisations.
The first ever UN’s International Tea Day was observed on 21st May 2020.
